Cargo truck demand outperformed tippers across the industry.
Discounts, easy loans and pre-buying boosted wholesale sales.
The Indian commercial vehicle (CV) industry recorded a strong rise in wholesale sales in June 2026, with leading manufacturers reporting double-digit growth across most segments. The surge was mainly driven by pre-buying ahead of expected price hikes, attractive dealer discounts, easier financing options and improving demand from key industries.
While cargo trucks emerged as the biggest growth driver during the month, the tipper segment recorded only modest gains due to the seasonal slowdown caused by the monsoon.
India's leading CV manufacturers posted impressive wholesale sales in June 2026.
Tata Motors retained its leadership position with domestic commercial vehicle sales of 36,599 units, up 31% from 27,936 units sold in June 2025. Including international business, the company's total CV sales reached 40,805 units, registering a 35% year-on-year (YoY) increase.

According to Girish Wagh, Managing Director and CEO of Tata Motors, the company's performance was supported by healthy industry fundamentals and steady demand across commercial vehicle segments.
Ashok Leyland also reported strong growth, selling 17,912 units in the domestic market, a 26% YoY increase. Its Medium and Heavy Commercial Vehicle (M&HCV) truck segment delivered an outstanding performance, rising 44% to 9,458 units.

Industry data highlighted a clear improvement in cargo truck demand during June.
According to SP Singh, Senior Fellow and Coordinator at the Indian Foundation of Transport Research and Training (IFTRT), combined sales of Intermediate Light Commercial Vehicles (ILCV) and Medium & Heavy Commercial Vehicle (M&HCV) trucks increased 22.30% month-on-month (MoM) to 31,489 units.
The Heavy Commercial Vehicle (HCV) cargo segment (28.2T-44.2T multi-axle trucks) recorded an impressive 27.19% MoM growth. This indicates a strong recovery in long-haul freight demand, supported by higher movement of infrastructure materials, steel, cement and FMCG goods.
Meanwhile, two-axle trucks (7.5T-18.5T GVW) rose from 12,142 units in May to 13,770 units in June, an increase of 1,628 units or 13.40%.
However, the HCV tipper segment grew only 2.52%, increasing from 5,785 units in May to 5,951 units in June. Singh explained that mining and construction activities remained stable rather than expanding rapidly, while the arrival of the monsoon also slowed tipper deployment.
Several factors came together to boost CV sales during June.
One of the biggest reasons was pre-buying by fleet operators before OEMs implemented expected 3-5% price hikes from July.
Dealers also offered heavy discounts ranging between 12% and 18% to reduce inventory, making new vehicles more attractive to buyers.
Financing conditions also improved significantly as banks and Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) reduced lending rates. In addition, financing packages that included 100% vehicle funding along with a two-month repayment moratorium encouraged many single-owner fleet operators to purchase new vehicles.
According to Singh, this combination revived nearly 30% of the single-owner market, adding around 1,500 to 1,600 additional vehicle sales during the month.
The Small Commercial Vehicle (SCV) and Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) segments continued to perform well.
Tata Motors' SCV cargo and pickup segment grew 37% YoY to 13,728 units.
Force Motors reported 3,547 domestic units in its combined SCV, LCV and Utility Vehicle (UV) category, registering 26.63% growth.
VECV's domestic Eicher SCV/LMD truck segment (below 18.5 tonnes) recorded an impressive 37.9% increase.
The steady performance of these smaller commercial vehicles reflects healthy demand from logistics, last-mile delivery and regional transportation businesses.
The passenger commercial vehicle segment delivered mixed results across manufacturers.
Tata Motors recorded a 24% increase in passenger carrier sales, reaching 7,040 units.
Mahindra also reported positive growth, with passenger vehicle sales rising 16% to 2,111 units.
However, the heavy-duty bus segment remained under pressure.
Ashok Leyland's domestic M&HCV bus sales declined 28% YoY to 1,673 units.
VECV's domestic Eicher heavy-duty bus sales fell 26.7% to 132 units.
On the other hand, VECV's Light and Medium Duty (LMD) bus segment grew 21.1%, reaching 1,958 units, showing continued demand for buses used in regional and institutional transport.
The commercial vehicle industry entered the second quarter of FY2026-27 on a strong note, supported by healthy freight movement, improving industrial activity, better financing availability and attractive dealer incentives. Although cargo trucks led the market with strong growth, tipper demand remained subdued due to seasonal factors. Going forward, the impact of higher vehicle prices and monsoon-related demand will determine whether this growth momentum continues in the coming months.

June 2026 proved to be a strong month for India's commercial vehicle industry, with pre-buying, attractive dealer discounts and easier financing driving healthy wholesale growth. Cargo trucks led the recovery as industrial and freight activity improved, while SCV and LCV segments also remained resilient. Although heavy-duty bus and tipper sales stayed relatively weak, the overall market outlook remains positive, supported by improving economic activity and continued fleet replacement demand.
