Ashok Leyland has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Haryana to establish a new Institute of Driving Training and Research in Ambala. The initiative aims to strengthen professional driver training, improve road safety and create more skilled employment opportunities in India's transport and logistics sector.
The agreement was formalised between Shri Atul Dwivedi, Transport Commissioner and Secretary to the Government of Haryana, and Dharmendra Pal Singh, Head of the Driver Training Institute at Ashok Leyland.
The upcoming institute will be spread across approximately 13 acres in Ambala, Haryana. It will offer practical, scientific and professional training for both Heavy Motor Vehicle (HMV) and Light Motor Vehicle (LMV) drivers.
Once operational, the facility will have the capacity to train around 2,000 new commercial vehicle drivers annually. It will also provide refresher and skill-development training to nearly 20,000 existing drivers every year.
The institute is expected to play an important role in improving driving skills and preparing trained professionals for the growing needs of India's commercial vehicle, transport and logistics industries.
The Ambala campus will be equipped with modern training infrastructure designed to offer a real-world learning experience. Key facilities will include:
Digital classrooms for modern and interactive learning
Advanced driving simulators
Live engine and transmission demonstration areas
Medical infrastructure
Hostel accommodation for trainees
Specialised driving tracks designed to replicate real-world operating conditions
These facilities will help drivers gain practical knowledge about vehicle operation, safety practices and handling different on-road situations.
Commenting on the partnership, Shenu Agarwal, Managing Director and CEO of Ashok Leyland, said that skilled and responsible drivers are central to building a safe and efficient transportation ecosystem.
“Our partnership with the Government of Haryana to establish this modern Institute of Driving Training and Research in Ambala is another significant step in that journey,” he said.
The collaboration highlights the increasing importance of structured driver training as commercial transportation continues to expand. Better-trained drivers can contribute to safer roads, improved vehicle handling and more efficient transport operations.
