Tata Motors showcases high-torque Prima AutoShift tippers and electric trucks at EXCON 2025, targeting India’s shift toward deep mining and sustainable haulage solutions.
Tata Motors Targets Deep Mining with High-Torque Prima Tippers
Tata Motors Gears Up for Deep Mining with High-Torque Prima AutoShift Tippers

Key Highlights

  • Deep mining driving need for high-torque trucks.

  • Prima 3540.K delivers 375 hp and 1,800 Nm torque.

  • Tested in real mining conditions across India.

  • Regulatory delays limit deep mining potential.

  • Strong focus on electric and alternative-fuel tippers.

India’s mining sector is slowly moving from shallow excavation to deeper pits, creating strong demand for high-torque, technology-driven haulage vehicles. Sensing this shift, Tata Motors is strengthening its presence in the deep-mining segment with advanced tipper and electric mobility solutions showcased at EXCON 2025 in Bengaluru.

Deep Mining Driving Demand for Powerful Trucks

India’s rising need for coal, iron ore, marble, and other minerals is pushing mining operations into deeper zones. Unlike shallow mining, deep mining requires vehicles that can pull heavy loads up steep gradients with high reliability and safety.

Rajesh Kaul, Vice President and Business Head – Trucks, Tata Motors Ltd., explained that as mining moves “deeper and deeper,” vehicle requirements change significantly. Higher torque, better control, and advanced technology become critical to maintain productivity in challenging conditions.

Prima 3540.K AutoShift Built for Deep-Mining Needs

To meet these demands, Tata Motors has introduced the Prima 3540.K AutoShift, designed specifically for deep-mining operations.

Key highlights of the Prima 3540.K AutoShift include:

  • Cummins 8.5L engine

  • 375 hp power output

  • 1,800 Nm torque

  • 12-speed AMT (Automated Manual Transmission)

  • Advanced safety and performance features for heavy-haulage applications

According to the company, these tippers have been tested and validated in real mining conditions, including mines in Odisha and other regions, ensuring suitability for demanding deep-pit operations.

Regulatory Challenges Slowing Deep Mining in India

In India, mining exploration is typically limited to depths of 50–100 metres, while global standards go up to 300 metres. This gap is largely due to regulatory and technical challenges.

Mining approvals remain a major bottleneck. Environmental clearances and permits in India can take four to five years, compared to around six months in leading mining economies. This delay restricts access to deeper mineral deposits, including critical minerals.

The regulatory framework is governed by the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957 (MMDR Act). Recent changes under the Mineral Conservation and Development (Amendment) Rules, 2024, aim to ease mining plan requirements for certain categories, offering some relief to the sector.

Market Growth Signals Opportunity

Industry projections underline the long-term potential. According to Credence Research, India’s underground mining equipment market is expected to grow from $1.88 billion in 2023 to $3.33 billion by 2032, at a 6.53% CAGR. However, this growth is expected to be concentrated in specific sectors and regions rather than across all operators.

Wide Range of Tippers and Electric Vehicles on Display

Alongside deep-mining solutions, Tata Motors showcased a diverse portfolio addressing construction, logistics, and sustainable mobility needs:

  • Prima E.28K: A 28-tonne battery-electric tipper for shallow mining, mineral transport, bulk cargo, and port operations

  • Signa 2820.TK CNG: A 28-tonne CNG tipper designed for construction applications

  • Signa 4832.TK: A 48-tonne, 5-axle tipper with a 32 m³ load body, ideal for coal transportation

  • Prima 3532.TK: Features a 26 m³ load body, the largest in its segment, targeted at construction aggregate movement

  • Prima E.55S Battery: An electric prime mover aimed at logistics operations

Strengthening Position in Future-Ready Mining

With mining operations going deeper and sustainability gaining importance, Tata Motors is positioning itself with high-torque diesel tippers and zero-emission electric solutions. The company’s focus on technology, performance, and real-world validation reflects its strategy to support India’s evolving mining and infrastructure needs.

CMV360 Says

India’s shift toward deep mining is creating demand for powerful, technology-rich haulage vehicles. Tata Motors is addressing this need with the Prima 3540. K AutoShift is designed for high torque, safety, and efficiency in deep pits. Alongside this, the company’s wide range of diesel, CNG, and electric tippers highlights its readiness to support mining, construction, and logistics as the sector evolves.
