The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the continuation of fortified rice distribution under all government welfare schemes until December 2028. This decision is aimed at combating malnutrition and addressing nutrient deficiencies across India.

Fortified rice distribution will be extended from July 2024 to December 2028 under various schemes, including the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY). This initiative ensures that fortified rice will be provided through the Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS) and other welfare programs.
Fortified rice is enriched with essential micronutrients like iron, folic acid, and Vitamin B12, which are crucial for health, especially in vulnerable groups like children and women. Since rice is a staple food for 65% of the Indian population, adding these nutrients helps to tackle health issues such as anaemia and other deficiencies.
The Prime Minister highlighted the importance of nutritional security in his Independence Day address in 2021, emphasizing the need to tackle malnutrition. The distribution of fortified rice is a significant step in addressing this issue, especially among low-income communities.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy to improve the overall health of the population, with the entire program funded by the central government under PMGKAY’s food subsidy program.

The process of rice fortification has already been implemented nationwide in three phases, with the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approving the plan in April 2022. By March 2024, fortified rice had been successfully integrated into all government schemes, including the Integrated Child Development Service (ICDS) and PM POSHAN (formerly the Mid-Day Meal scheme).
According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), conducted between 2019 and 2021, anaemia is still a widespread issue in India, affecting people of all ages and income groups. Fortifying staple foods like rice has been a proven strategy to improve nutrition and reduce malnutrition globally. With the extension of this program, the government aims to further improve public health and ensure that the population, especially those in need, receives essential nutrients.
