Farmers often face losses due to unpredictable weather conditions like rain, hailstorms, droughts, and extreme heat. However, a new farming technique that promises a solution, enabling farmers to cultivate vegetables all year round, unaffected by weather fluctuations and significantly boosting their income has been introduced.

This innovative method is based on polyhouse technology. Traditionally, polyhouses have been expensive, limiting access for many farmers. However, agricultural scientists, particularly those at Birsa Agricultural University, have developed a groundbreaking variation known as the roof-displaced polyhouse technique.
The roof-displaced polyhouse is constructed using bamboo and specialized covering materials. Unlike traditional polyhouses, the roof in this design can be adjusted according to weather conditions. During summer, it's covered with UV-stabilized film to shield plants from excessive heat, while in winter, it's replaced with shade net material to maintain optimal growing conditions.

Compared to conventional polyhouses and shade net technology, the roof-displaced polyhouse offers several advantages. It allows for year-round cultivation without interruptions, ensuring consistent production and quality. This technology also effectively manages microclimate conditions like temperature, light intensity, and humidity, resulting in healthier crops and higher yields.
Almost all types of fruits, flowers, and vegetables can be cultivated using this method. Essentially merging the benefits of both polyhouses and shade nets, the roof-extended polyhouse provides farmers with a versatile and efficient growing environment.
To encourage adoption, the government provides subsidies of up to 50% for polyhouse and shade net technologies. In Bihar, for instance, farmers can receive subsidies of Rs 935 per square meter for the construction of the polyhouse and Rs 710 per square meter for shade net technology.

The roof-displaced polyhouse technology represents a significant advancement in farming practices, offering farmers a reliable way to increase their income and mitigate the risks associated with changing weather patterns. With continued support and adoption, this technique has the potential to revolutionize agriculture and improve livelihoods across the country.
