In India, agriculture is a vital source of income for millions. The government addresses crop price uncertainty by offering Minimum Support Price (MSP) to farmers. MSP is the assured price at which the government buys crops from farmers, protecting them if market prices fall. Each year, the government sets MSP for several crops to ensure farmers do not face losses.
Many farmers seek information on which crops have the highest MSP and offer better returns. This article presents the 2026 MSP list, highlights crops with the highest support prices, and explains important factors for crop selection.
MSP is the minimum price at which the government purchases crops from farmers. If market prices drop below MSP, farmers can still sell their produce to government agencies at the fixed rate. This system provides income security and encourages higher production.
The Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP) recommends MSP rates. The government considers several factors when setting MSP, including production cost, demand, and supply. Since 2018, the government aims to provide at least 50% profit over total cost (A2 + FL) to farmers.
India offers MSP for about 23 major crops. Pulses, oilseeds, and spices often receive higher MSP compared to other crops. According to recent government data, sesame (til) and moong dal have some of the highest MSPs in 2026. High MSP for these crops is due to strong demand and limited production.
Despite high MSP, farmers often prefer crops like tur dal, moong, mustard, and wheat. These crops are favored because of stable demand, easier cultivation, and reliable government procurement. Choosing a crop based only on MSP may not always be the best decision for farmers.
Farmers should consider several factors beyond MSP. These include production costs, market demand, weather conditions, and government procurement policies. Careful planning and crop selection based on accurate information can increase farm income.
MSP remains a key tool for economic security in Indian agriculture. The government announces MSP for around 23 crops, with pulses and oilseeds often receiving the highest rates. However, successful farming depends on a combination of MSP, cost, demand, and support systems.
