There is growing discussion in India’s tractor market about the upcoming TREM V emission norms. Many farmers are asking an important question, will tractors become more expensive in 2026?
Reports suggest that the government may introduce the new rules from April 1, 2026, but no final notification has been issued yet. Tractor companies and farmer groups have also asked the government to introduce the rules gradually to avoid a sudden increase in tractor prices.
Here is a simple explanation of what TREM V means, when it may start, and how it could affect tractor prices in India.

At present, tractors in India follow two main emission stages:
Tractors below 50 horsepower (HP) follow TREM IIIA norms
Tractors above 50 HP follow TREM IV norms
The government is now planning to move all tractor categories to the stricter TREM V stage. If this happens, even small tractors will need engine upgrades to reduce emissions, which is why farmers are worried about higher tractor prices.
The short answer is that the final decision has not been announced yet.
Discussions are still going on between the government, tractor manufacturers, and farmer organizations. Industry sources say the government may delay implementation for smaller tractors because most small and marginal farmers buy tractors below 50 HP. A sudden price increase could affect rural demand.
What tractor companies are asking for:
Manufacturers want the 25-50 HP segment to get more time and have requested the government to delay TREM V implementation for this range until 2028.
What the government may consider:
Reports suggest the government could introduce an intermediate emission stage between TREM IV and TREM V. This would help avoid a sharp increase in tractor prices.
If current discussions move forward, the rollout may follow this pattern:
Tractor Segment | Present Norm | Possible Timeline |
25-50 HP | TREM IIIA | 2028 (industry demand) or intermediate stage |
50-75 HP | TREM IV | October 2026 or later |
Above 75 HP | TREM IV | April or October 2026 |
Farmer organization SKM-NP (Samyukt Kisan Morcha - Non-Political) has also requested the government to keep tractors below 70 HP outside strict norms for now, as most small farmers depend on this segment.
This is the biggest concern for farmers.
According to industry estimates, tractor prices may increase by 15-20% if TREM V is fully implemented.
Example:
A 45 HP tractor currently costs about ₹7.80 lakh
After TREM V, the price could rise to ₹8.97 lakh - ₹9.36 lakh
Such a price increase can significantly affect small farmers who usually purchase tractors through loans.
Earlier, the government reduced GST on tractors from 18% to 5%, which helped buyers save money.
However, the price increase caused by TREM V could offset a large part of this benefit.
TREM V is not just a policy change - it requires major technical upgrades in tractor engines.
Tractors may need technologies such as Common Rail Direct Injection (CRDI) and Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) to control emissions. These upgrades increase manufacturing costs.
Components like Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) may become mandatory. These systems are expensive and may also increase maintenance costs.
Older tractors were mostly mechanical and could be repaired easily by local mechanics. New emission systems are more electronic and complex, meaning farmers may need trained technicians and specialized workshops, which are not always available in rural areas.
Both manufacturers and farmers have raised similar concerns about the speed of implementation.
Major companies like Mahindra & Mahindra, Escorts Kubota, and TAFE believe that introducing strict norms too quickly may slow rural demand. The Tractor and Mechanization Association (TMA) has already submitted recommendations to the government.
Farmer leaders say that higher tractor prices will increase loan pressure. Many farmers already rely on financing, and a higher purchase price means larger EMIs and greater financial stress.
Many potential buyers are asking this practical question.
According to CRISIL Ratings, tractor sales often increase before new emission norms are implemented because buyers try to purchase before prices rise.
If tractor prices increase due to TREM V, buying a tractor before the rules are implemented in early 2026 could help farmers save money. However, since the government has not issued the final notification yet, buyers should keep tracking official updates.
The biggest impact of TREM V could be on small and marginal farmers.
In India, 9 out of 10 tractors sold are below 50 HP, making the small tractor segment extremely important.
If prices increase by 15-20%:
Many farmers may postpone buying tractors
Tractor demand in villages may slow
Farm mechanization could slow down
Rural businesses linked to tractors may face pressure
Farmer groups have warned that higher prices could increase the debt burden on farmers.
India is currently the largest tractor market in the world, valued at around $9.4 billion.
FY2025 tractor sales: More than 9.39 lakh units
FY2026 expected sales: Around 9.75 lakh units
Factors like a good monsoon, MSP support, and strong rural activity are supporting tractor demand. However, if TREM V leads to a sharp increase in prices, the growth of the tractor market could slow down.

TREM (Tractor Emission Norms) are pollution-control standards set by the government to limit harmful exhaust emissions from tractors and farm machinery. These norms are similar to Bharat Stage (BS) emission standards used for other vehicles.
They regulate pollutants such as:
Nitrogen oxides (NOx)
Particulate matter (PM)
Hydrocarbons
Carbon monoxide
India introduced tractor emission norms in 1999, followed by:
TREM Stage II - 2003
TREM Stage III - 2005
TREM IIIA - 2010-11 (horsepower-based limits)
TREM IV - 2023 for tractors above 50 HP
The proposed TREM V norms aim to further reduce emissions. For tractors above 50 HP, prices may increase by 20-25%, which could add financial pressure on small farmers.
Many farmer groups argue that these stricter rules should apply only to tractors above 70 HP, which are often used for non-agricultural activities.

TREM V emission norms aim to reduce pollution and improve environmental performance in the agricultural machinery sector. However, they may also increase tractor prices and affect small farmers. The government has not yet issued the final notification, and discussions are still ongoing. In the coming months, it will become clear whether the new rules will start from April 2026 or be introduced gradually in phases.
