Olectra Greentech has now started testing its 6×4 heavy-duty electric tipper in Hyderabad.

Key Highlights:

  • Olectra Greentech Ltd is expanding into the heavy-duty electric truck market.
  • The company has begun testing its 6×4 heavy-duty electric tipper.
  • A new manufacturing facility near Hyderabad will support truck production.
  • Olectra is also developing hydrogen-powered buses.
  • Olectra aims to gain a strong market position ahead of traditional truck manufacturers.

Olectra Greentech Ltd, known for its electric buses in India, is now entering the heavy-duty electric truck market. The company also plans to increase its production capacity to 10,000 vehicles per year. Part of the MEIL Group, Olectra is focusing on high-tonnage and mining trucks, where competition is still low. This move comes as more businesses look for sustainable transport options.

K.V. Pradeep, Chairman and Managing Director of Olectra, said, “With rising fuel costs, electric trucks will be a game-changer. Our new tipper comes with high-performance features, offering a cost-effective and efficient solution as promised.”

Journey From Buses to Trucks

Olectra, which launched electric buses in India in 2015, has now started testing its 6×4 heavy-duty electric tipper in Hyderabad. This tipper offers a 220 km range on a single charge and comes with strong bogie suspension, allowing it to handle steep roads with over 25% gradients.

To support its truck production, Olectra is building a modern manufacturing facility near Hyderabad, which will soon be operational. Olectra is not just focusing on electric mobility but also exploring hydrogen fuel cell technology. The company initially worked with Reliance on a fuel cell bus project but is now developing hydrogen-powered buses on its own. However, the launch timeline is still uncertain.

In addition, Olectra is using its battery expertise to enter the energy storage market. With state governments and power utilities investing in grid stabilization, the company sees great potential in large-scale battery storage systems. “Wherever opportunities come up, Olectra will take part in tenders,” said Pradeep, highlighting the company’s plans to grow beyond vehicle manufacturing into infrastructure solutions.

Market Outlook

Experts believe Olectra’s entry into electric trucks comes at the right time. With stricter emission rules and the cost benefits of electric vehicles, the demand for electric trucks is expected to rise. This move gives Olectra an edge over traditional truck makers, who are still in the early stages of electrification. As one of the first in the segment, the company could gain a strong market position.

Founded in 2000 as part of Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Ltd (MEIL), Olectra started as an insulator manufacturer before becoming India’s top electric bus manufacturer. This expansion further strengthens its role in shaping India’s electric commercial vehicle industry.
