OHM Global Mobility Launches 130 Electric Buses in Chennai Under MTC Phase 2 Programme

OHM Global Mobility, the e-mobility arm of Ashok Leyland, has launched 130 air-conditioned electric buses in Chennai under Phase 2 of the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) electric bus programme.

The newly launched buses are part of a larger order under which OHM Global Mobility will supply and operate a total of 500 electric buses for MTC during the second phase of the programme. The electric buses have been manufactured by Switch, the electric vehicle subsidiary of Ashok Leyland.

130 Electric Buses Flagged Off in Chennai

The first batch of 130 electric buses under Phase 2 was flagged off at the Tamil Nadu Secretariat.

The launch event was attended by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, Transport Minister Vijay Tamilan Parthiban, Transport Secretary Nirmal Raj, MTC Managing Director D. Mohan, and officials from OHM Global Mobility.

The deployment marks another major step towards expanding clean and sustainable public transportation in Chennai.

500 Electric Buses Planned Under MTC Phase 2

The 130 buses represent the first phase of the larger 500-electric-bus deployment plan under MTC's Phase 2 programme.

OHM Global Mobility will progressively deploy the remaining electric buses across Chennai in the coming period. Along with supplying the buses, the company will also manage fleet operations and maintenance services as part of the programme.

The expanded electric bus fleet is expected to further strengthen Chennai's public transport network while supporting the shift towards zero-emission mobility.

OHM's Strong Performance in Chennai Phase 1

The Phase 2 deployment builds on OHM Global Mobility's earlier electric bus operations in Chennai.

According to the company, its electric buses operating under Phase 1 have collectively covered more than 3 crore kilometres. The company's Phase 1 depots have also achieved schedule adherence of over 99%, highlighting the operational reliability of its electric bus services.

OHM to Handle Fleet Operations and Maintenance

As part of the Phase 2 programme, OHM Global Mobility will support MTC beyond the deployment of electric buses.

The company will provide services related to:

• Electric fleet operations

• Bus maintenance

• Charging infrastructure support

• Mobility-as-a-Service solutions

OHM said its experience in electric mobility and fleet management will help support the expansion of Chennai's electric public transportation network.
