India’s First 250 MT Electric Crane Begins Operations at Hindustan Zinc

Key Highlights

  • Hindustan Zinc deploys India’s first 250 MT electric crane at Debari, Rajasthan

  • Hybrid crane reduces emissions and replaces diesel usage in operations

  • Expected to cut around 250.8 tCO₂e emissions annually

  • Part of company’s net-zero goal by 2050 or earlier

  • Supports wider clean mobility shift including EVs, LNG trucks, and BEVs

Hindustan Zinc Limited has taken a major step toward green mining by deploying India’s first 250 Metric Tonne (MT) capacity electric crane at its Zinc Smelter in Debari, Rajasthan. This hybrid crane, which can operate on both diesel and electric power, is designed to reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency in core industrial operations.

The initiative marks an important milestone in India’s shift toward low-carbon industrial infrastructure and supports Hindustan Zinc’s long-term goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 or earlier.

Electric Crane to Cut Emissions and Improve Efficiency

The newly deployed crane is expected to play a key role in reducing on-site carbon emissions. It will replace a diesel-operated crane that consumes around 93,600 litres of diesel every year.

By making this switch, the company expects to avoid nearly 250.8 tCO₂e of carbon emissions annually, while also improving operational efficiency. The project also highlights how hybrid technologies can be successfully used in heavy industries that are traditionally difficult to decarbonize.

Strengthening Hindustan Zinc’s Green Transition

This development is part of Hindustan Zinc’s broader sustainability roadmap, which includes multiple clean energy and green mobility initiatives across its operations.

Over the past few years, the company has introduced several eco-friendly solutions, including:

  • India’s first underground battery electric vehicles (BEVs) at Sindesar Khurd Mine in 2022–23

  • Electric and LNG-powered logistics fleets across operations

  • Rajasthan’s largest EV bulker fleet with 40 electric bulkers in partnership with GreenLine Mobility

  • Deployment of two electric buses for employee transport under a 41-bus green mobility plan

  • Introduction of four electric loaders at Rampura Agucha Mine

These initiatives show a consistent push toward reducing dependence on fossil fuels and increasing clean energy usage in mining and logistics operations.

Leadership View on Sustainability Commitment

Arun Misra, CEO of Hindustan Zinc, said the company’s approach is deeply rooted in sustainability and innovation.

He stated that the deployment of India’s first 250 MT electric crane reflects the company’s strong commitment to adopting clean technologies and transforming core industrial processes into low-carbon systems. According to him, such initiatives help build a more sustainable and resilient industrial ecosystem.

Partnership Driving Innovation

Deepak Garg, Managing Director of SANY India, highlighted the importance of collaboration in achieving sustainability goals. He said Hindustan Zinc has consistently led the way in adopting advanced technologies in mining.

He added that the 250-tonne diesel-electric hybrid crane is designed to reduce emissions, improve energy efficiency, and support responsible industrial operations, making it a strong example of innovation with environmental benefits.

Large-Scale Clean Energy and Logistics Transformation

Hindustan Zinc has already made significant progress in clean energy adoption. The company:

  • Became the first in India to deploy underground BEVs in mining operations

  • Operates over 250 LNG trucks, making it Rajasthan’s largest LNG fleet operator in industrial logistics

  • Increased renewable energy usage to nearly 18% of its total power mix

  • Commissioned over 530 MW of round-the-clock renewable energy capacity

These efforts are aligned with global climate goals, including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (2030), focusing on clean energy, climate action, and responsible production.

Strong Net-Zero Roadmap

Hindustan Zinc’s sustainability strategy is built on a clear decarbonization roadmap. The company aims to:

  • Achieve Net Zero emissions by 2050 or earlier

  • Reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50% from 2020 levels

  • Cut Scope 3 emissions by 25% from the 2020 baseline

The company also became the first Indian member of the International Council on Mining and Metals, strengthening its global sustainability commitment.

EcoZen and Global Recognition

Hindustan Zinc has also launched EcoZen, Asia’s first low-carbon zinc brand, produced using renewable energy and designed for responsible global sourcing.

In addition, the company became the first Indian producer certified under the international Zinc Mark validation process under the Copper Mark Assurance framework.

Hindustan Zinc has also been recognized globally, being named the world’s most sustainable metals and mining company for the third consecutive year in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2025.
