540/540E PTO with 22.8 HP output.
GoSun, an Ohio-based solar appliance company, has partnered with Indian tractor manufacturer Moonrider to bring a new all-electric tractor to the US market. Called the Moonrider 27 All-Electric Solar Tractor, the model combines a 27 HP electric powertrain with an optional solar charging system, allowing farmers and landowners to generate additional energy directly from sunlight.
Developed for small-scale farming, property maintenance and utility work, the tractor aims to offer a quieter and cleaner alternative to traditional diesel utility tractors. Its biggest highlight is the ability to continue gaining range from solar energy while parked or working outdoors.
The Moonrider 27 is powered by a 20 kW, approximately 27 HP electric motor that delivers torque to all four wheels. The tractor uses a 24 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, a chemistry known for its stability, safety and long service life.
GoSun says the tractor can provide up to five hours of continuous operation on a full charge. For small farms and hobby farms, this could cover a substantial portion of routine daily work, including general property maintenance and implement-based jobs.
The tractor can be charged through a standard 220/240V AC Level 2 charging connection. However, its optional 1.1 kW solar array is what makes the model different from conventional electric tractors.
On a sunny day, the solar system can provide around 1.5 additional hours of operating time. For users who do not operate the tractor heavily every day, regular solar charging could potentially reduce the need to plug into the grid for extended periods.
Despite its solar-focused technology, the Moonrider 27 is built as a proper utility tractor rather than a lightweight recreational vehicle. It weighs approximately 1,095 kg and gets four-wheel drive, providing traction and pulling capability across different types of terrain.
The tractor can lift up to 750 kg on its hitch, while the rear mechanical PTO produces 22.8 HP at 540/540E rpm. The 540 rpm PTO allows the tractor to operate a wide range of conventional implements, including mowers, tillers and post-hole diggers.
This compatibility could be particularly useful for farmers and property owners who already have implements and want to switch from diesel to electric power without replacing their entire equipment setup.
The Moonrider 27 comes with a 9-speed forward and 3-speed reverse constant-mesh transmission. It also features oil-immersed brakes and a dry single clutch.
One of its practical advantages is its 1.4-metre turning radius. The tight turning capability can make the tractor easier to operate in confined spaces, barns, smaller fields and between crop rows.
GoSun has also planned an optional generator add-on. With this feature, the tractor can work as a portable power source for electric tools, giving it another use beyond farming.
GoSun founder and CEO Patrick Sherwin said small-scale farming and property management have depended on noisy and expensive diesel utility vehicles for too long. He added that the new all-electric tractor is designed to help farmers and land managers work in the sunshine while reducing operating costs and protecting soil and air quality.
The combination of electric power, conventional PTO capability and solar charging gives the Moonrider 27 a distinct proposition. While its five-hour operating time is unlikely to replace diesel tractors for large commercial farms covering hundreds of acres, it could be well suited to smaller farms, hobby farms and property maintenance.
The solar system should also be viewed as a supplementary energy source rather than a complete replacement for conventional charging. However, as battery capacity and solar efficiency improve, electric tractors could become increasingly practical for small-scale agricultural applications.

The GoSun Moonrider 27 brings together a 27 HP electric motor, four-wheel drive, a 24 kWh LFP battery and optional solar charging in a practical utility tractor. Its five-hour runtime, 750 kg hitch capacity and 540/540E PTO make it capable of genuine farm work, while the solar array can add around 1.5 hours of operation. For small farms and property owners, it could offer a cleaner and quieter alternative to diesel.
