Market Insight

September 2026 was a strong month for India's three-wheeler retail industry. Total sales crossed 1.32 lakh units, with both monthly and annual growth remaining firmly positive.

The biggest highlight was the performance of conventional passenger and goods three-wheelers. Passenger three-wheelers grew 37.64% YoY, while goods three-wheelers delivered an even stronger 63.48% annual increase.

At the same time, passenger e-rickshaws remained under pressure on a yearly basis, declining 13.35%. This contrast suggests that demand within the three-wheeler market is shifting across different applications and powertrain categories.

On the OEM front, Bajaj Auto continued to lead, but its market share fell from 40.06% to 35.21%. Mahindra recorded one of the most significant improvements, while Piaggio and TVS Motor also strengthened their market positions.

CMV360 Says

India's three-wheeler market delivered a strong performance in September 2026, with retail sales rising 22.25% YoY to 1,32,570 units. The growth was led by passenger and goods three-wheelers, with the goods segment emerging as the fastest-growing major category. Bajaj Auto remained firmly at the top with a 35.21% market share, but the decline in its share compared with last year shows that competition is becoming stronger. Mahindra, Piaggio and TVS Motor all recorded notable gains in sales and market presence. Meanwhile, the 13.35% YoY decline in passenger e-rickshaw sales remains an important trend to watch. As India's last-mile mobility market continues to evolve, the balance between conventional three-wheelers and electric mobility could become increasingly important in the months ahead.
