3 months ration to be given in May for June, to August.
Decision due to excess stock in FCI warehouses.
Around 80 crore people to benefit under PM-GKAY.
Over 66 million tonnes of grain in central stock.
Move helps clear space for the upcoming harvest.
In a major relief for ration card holders across the country, the Central Government has announced that free ration for three months will be distributed together this time. This decision comes in light of the large stock of food grains lying in government warehouses, and the need to make room for the new crop.

The reason behind this step is the huge stock of wheat and rice currently stored in the warehouses of the Food Corporation of India (FCI). According to official data, as of 28 February 2025, there were 86 million tonnes of rice and wheat in FCI's storage. By 27 April 2025, the stock had reached approximately 66.17 million tonnes.
This amount is far more than the country's monthly ration requirement. If not cleared, it can put pressure on the storage system, especially as the new crop is ready to arrive. To manage this, the government has decided to distribute 3 months ration together, just as it had done during the Covid-19 pandemic, when 2 months ration was provided at once.
As per government sources, the rations for June, July, and August will be allocated and lifted in May 2025 itself. The states have been directed to lift their entire quota by May 31, and they will also be allowed some grace period if required.

Help states plan and distribute ration more efficiently
Under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PM-GKAY), around 80 crore people in India receive free ration every month. Each beneficiary gets 5 kg of rice or wheat or both.
Monthly distribution includes:
33–34 lakh tonnes of rice
15–16 lakh tonnes of wheat
This means about 50 lakh tonnes of grain is distributed each month, ensuring food security for the poor and needy across the country.
Yes. The three-month advance ration will be provided under PM-GKAY and will reach the same 80 crore beneficiaries. The quantity of grains will remain the same—5 kg per person for each of the three months, delivered together.
No. Experts have clarified that this is a routine administrative process, not related to any political issue or border tension. The decision is taken purely for efficient stock management and to ensure the smooth operation of the public distribution system.
This practice is often followed during April-May, when new crop arrivals require the government to free up storage space and manage the logistics better.

The government’s move to distribute three months ration at once aims to ease storage pressure and ensure smooth delivery. With over 80 crore beneficiaries, this timely decision supports food security while managing surplus grain stocks efficiently. It’s a planned, non-political step to streamline distribution ahead of the new crop arrival.
