India’s Tractor Sales Rise 9% in May 2025: Strong Rural Demand and Monsoon Drive Growth

Key Highlights:

  • Domestic tractor sales in India rose by 9% in May 2025, reaching 90,500 units, compared to 82,948 units in May 2024.
  • Exports grew 1.3% year-on-year to 8,930 units and jumped 20% over April 2025 figures.
  • Mahindra & Mahindra recorded 38,914 unit sales, a 10% increase from last year, despite an 8% drop in exports.
  • Escorts Kubota saw a slight total sales rise of 0.7% but experienced a 2% dip in domestic sales; exports grew by 71.3%.
  • Sonalika Tractors achieved its highest-ever May sales with 14,213 units, setting a new monthly record.

India’s tractor market saw a strong growth in May 2025, with sales increasing by 9% compared to the same month last year. This rise reflects positive rural sentiment, better farm conditions, and the early arrival of the monsoon, which has encouraged early sowing activities across major agricultural regions.

Sales Performance Overview

As per the data shared by the Tractor and Mechanization Association (TMA), domestic tractor sales stood at 90,500 units in May 2025, up from 82,948 units in May 2024. Even on a month-to-month basis, tractor sales grew 9%, rising from 82,839 units in April 2025.

Exports also showed an upward trend. Tractor exports reached 8,930 units in May, a 1.3% increase year-on-year, and a 20% jump compared to April. Industry experts believe this growth is driven by early kharif season preparations, expectations of good rainfall, and support provided from the government through schemes and better minimum support prices (MSP).

Mahindra & Mahindra Leads the Market

Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), India’s largest tractor manufacturer, sold 38,914 tractors in May 2025, marking a 10% increase compared to the same period last year. M&M exported 1,729 units during the month. However, the company saw an 8% drop in exports compared to last year. International market conditions have been challenging, affecting export performance.

Veejay Nakra, President of the Farm Equipment Business at M&M, said that the early monsoon has encouraging farm activities such as land preparation for paddy crops. He added that higher MSPs, better reservoir levels, and new government schemes have improved farmer confidence, supporting stronger demand for tractors.

In a previous investor call, Rajesh Jejurika, Executive Director and CEO of Mahindra’s Auto and Farm Sector, acknowledged slower progress in global markets. The company also reported losses from its overseas subsidiaries, Sampo Rosenlew (Finland) and Mitsubishi Agricultural Machinery (Japan).

Mixed Results for Escorts Kubota

Escorts Kubota Limited reported total sales of 10,354 tractors in May 2025, showing a small increase of 0.7% over the previous year. However, the company’s domestic sales were slightly lower, dropping 2% to 9,703 units. On the positive side, exports grew sharply by 71.3%, reaching 651 units. Escorts Kubota said domestic sales were affected by seasonal changes but is hopeful of recovery as the monsoon spreads and rural liquidity improves.

Sonalika Tractors Hits Record High

Sonalika Tractors, operated by International Tractors Limited, reported its highest-ever sales in the month of May. The company sold 14,213 units, achieving a new record for the month. Sonalika has been growing steadily in both domestic and international markets and continues to strengthen its position as one of India’s leading tractor brands.

Positive Outlook for Tractor Industry

Tractor manufacturers are optimistic about the months ahead. Factors such as early monsoon arrival, good water levels in reservoirs, rising MSPs for kharif crops, and strong farmer morale are expected to drive tractor demand further in the coming months. Overall, the 9% growth in domestic sales and the upward trend in exports suggest a healthy demand environment for tractors in India. With continued support from weather and government policies, the industry is likely to maintain strong performance in the coming quarters.

CMV360 Says

The rise in tractor sales in May 2025 clearly shows growing confidence among farmers ahead of the kharif season. Early monsoon rains and improved crop prices are motivating farmers to invest in better equipment. This increase in the tractor demand is a positive sign for the overall rural economy, as it often leads to increased productivity and income. If these conditions continue, the agriculture sector could see steady growth, benefiting both farmers and related industries.
