Key Highlights:
Volvo Group has partnered with two significant supplier partners in Chennai, India, Rane (Madras) Ltd and Madras Engineering Industries Private Limited, to accelerate its efforts to achieve climate neutrality by 2040.
Volvo Group Trucks will incorporate fossil-free components from these Indian supply partners, potentially reducing CO2 emissions by 13,000 tons each year.
Fossil-Free Tie Rods and Linkages by Rane
Volvo Group collaborated with Rane (Madras) Ltd to produce fossil-free tie rods and links, which are critical components that drive the wheels of Volvo trucks. These components are made with 100% renewable energy across the supply chain, eliminating the usage of fossil fuels and toxic materials.
The process also incorporates fossil-free steel and electric vehicles for material movement, creating a truly sustainable production line. This innovation is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 600 tons annually for Volvo.
Sustainable Ferrous Castings by MEI
Volvo Group has collaborated with Madras Engineering Industries Private Limited (MEI) to develop fossil-free ferrous castings, which are another key component of automobiles.
These castings, designed to withstand high stress and fatigue, are produced using only renewable energy and metallic scrap instead of virgin resources like pig iron. The process is entirely free from landfills and hazardous materials, resulting in products that are fully recyclable.
Future Impact
The components developed by RANE and MEI are scheduled to be introduced in Q1 2025. The tie rods and connections developed with RANE are expected to reduce Volvo's CO2 emissions by 600 tons per year.
If applied across other supply partners making equivalent components, the savings might total several thousand tons per year. Similarly, MEI's fossil-free castings are estimated to reduce Volvo's CO2 emissions by 12,400 tonnes per year, with the potential to have a bigger industry impact if adopted by additional suppliers.
