Key Highlights:
Tata Motors is preparing for a future where commercial vehicles will be smart, connected, and controlled by software. Girish Wagh, Executive Director and Head of Commercial Vehicles at Tata Motors, shared that the company is working on building Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs) and putting money into AI and alternative fuel options. He mentioned in the company’s annual report that they are closely looking at the possibilities of SDVs, including the needed vehicle design and technology, to meet the needs of Indian customers and the local market.
Software-Defined Vehicles
Tata Motors is moving towards Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs) with the help of its strong digital setup and increasing AI-based projects. Wagh said that the digital systems built over the years are now helping the company bring AI into both customer services and internal work.
He also shared that Tata Motors is testing several AI-based ideas like predicting vehicle issues before they happen, giving real-time information about fleets, using smart tools for customer management, and personalising the sales process. These efforts aim to give better value, respond faster, and improve the overall experience for users.
Tata Motors has also improved its Enterprise Digital programme by using Industry 4.0 tools in factories, making the supply chain digital, and upgrading sales through platforms like E Guru. Wagh said this has helped the company deliver better and work more efficiently.
Multi-Fuel Strategy
Along with digital progress, the company is also focusing on clean mobility. This includes electric vehicles, CNG, LNG, and hydrogen. A major achievement this year was the launch of India’s first Hydrogen-powered Internal Combustion Engine (H2ICE) truck, showing Tata Motors’ strong focus on leading in alternative fuel technologies.
He also mentioned that Tata Motors is putting early investments into EV parts and control software to boost the performance and efficiency of its future electric vehicles. The company is continuing to invest in clean mobility options like EVs, CNG, LNG, and hydrogen to give customers more sustainable choices.
Tata Motors’ Smart City Mobility segment has rolled out over 3,600 electric buses, which have covered more than 30 crore kilometres with over 95% uptime. Wagh shared that the company is also making steady progress toward its long-term sustainability goals. He said that more than 45% of their commercial vehicle operations now use renewable electricity, and their Scope 3 emissions have dropped by 12% compared to last year.
