Piaggio Vehicles, a Piaggio Group company, has announced an ambitious proposal to launch a 'Battery Subscription' model for its Apé Elektrik electric three-wheelers. Prices for its electric three-wheelers would begin at Rs 2.59 lakh, compared to fixed battery electric three-wheelers, which start at Rs 4 lakh.
Barriers to Electric Vehicle Adoption
Diego Graffi, Chairman and Managing Director of Piaggio Vehicles, commented on the announcement, saying, "The industry-first 'Battery Subscription Model' removes another barrier to electric vehicle (EV) adoption by addressing battery concerns while also offering a cost-effective ownership option. We are convinced that this strategy will continue to encourage EV adoption even without subsidies."
Simplifying Ownership with Monthly Battery Rental
The overall goal of this approach is to simplify ownership and reduce upfront battery charges. Now, Piaggio customers can buy the Apé Elektrik for Rs 2.59 lakh and rent a Piaggio-approved battery pack from the dealership on a monthly basis.
The new Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme (EMPS) of the Indian government has reduced subsidies by half as part of a goal to accelerate the adoption of EVs across the country.
In a statement, the company stated that the innovative solution alleviates customers' concerns regarding battery maintenance, longevity, and resale, providing them with peace of mind while maintaining adaptability in the post-subsidy age.
According to the statement, by solving pricing and battery constraints, the subscription model can enable more widespread use of electric three-wheelers in India, resulting in greener mobility and lower emissions.
Subscription Details and Benefits
Piaggio provides a battery lease period of 120,000 kilometers or eight years for cargo three-wheelers and 150,000 kilometers or eight years for passenger vehicles, with the monthly rent decreased to zero after attaining the specified mileage.
The subscription also includes battery replacements at the same rental price after the original leasing term. The vehicle's chassis and powertrain must be registered in the customer's name for hypothecated loans from NBFCs.
Customers are not required to show any additional documents under the subscription model, and they can cancel or sell their vehicle at any time, just like with a conventional purchase.
Amit Sagar, Executive Vice President, CV Domestic Business at Piaggio Vehicles, adding, "Customers may now purchase an electric three-wheeler for a down payment of only Rs 30,000 and an EMI of Rs 8,000 per month, making it as simple to own as a CNG three-wheeler.”
Initial Availability and Expansion Plans
The battery subscription concept will be introduced in numerous major Indian cities. This consists of Gurgaon, Agra, Warangal, Raipur, Mathura, Nizamabad, Nagpur, Lucknow, Kurnool, Bangalore Kanpur, Anantpur, Tumkuru, Allahabad, Vijayawada, Mysuru, Delhi, Guntur, and Kolar.
Vehicles of this model are also available in Noida, Vizag, Mumbai, Ghaziabad, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Greater Noida, Hyderabad, Pune, and Faridabad.
