An Indian auto-rickshaw has made an unusual appearance on a UK road, catching the attention of social media users after Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra shared a video of the three-wheeler travelling through London.
Anand Mahindra shared the video on X on October 5, showing a Mahindra rickshaw moving along a British road. Sharing the video, he wrote in Gujarati, “UK ma riksha aavi gai chhe… Mahindra ni chhe, aapda,” which roughly translates to, “A rickshaw has arrived in the UK. It is Mahindra’s. It is ours.”
Mahindra also revealed that the three-wheeler was imported into the UK by a hobbyist. While auto-rickshaws are an everyday part of road transport in India, spotting one on a UK road is certainly an unusual sight.
Mahindra Rickshaw Spotted on London Road
The video shows the Mahindra three-wheeler travelling through London, creating a familiar yet unexpected scene for Indian viewers.
Auto-rickshaws are widely used across Indian cities for passenger transportation and last-mile mobility. In contrast, their presence on British roads is relatively uncommon, which helped the video attract attention online.
The post also led to plenty of humour from social media users. Some joked about bringing familiar Indian auto-rickshaw traditions to the UK, including fare negotiations and the well-known “meter se chalo” culture.
Others described the sight jokingly as “reverse colonisation,” highlighting the irony of an iconic Indian road vehicle appearing on the streets of London.
Mahindra Three-Wheelers Already Have an International Footprint
The Mahindra rickshaw featured in the video is not the company's first three-wheeler to reach international markets.
Mahindra has expanded its three-wheeler portfolio beyond India, including electric models such as the Mahindra Treo and Mahindra Treo Zor.
The Mahindra Treo is an electric passenger three-wheeler developed for urban mobility, while the Treo Zor is an electric cargo three-wheeler aimed at last-mile transportation.
The international presence of these electric three-wheelers means that Mahindra's three-wheeler business already has an overseas footprint. However, seeing a Mahindra rickshaw being driven on a London road still stands out because of how closely the vehicle is associated with everyday Indian mobility.
Social Media Users Bring Indian Auto Culture to London
The unusual sight quickly became a talking point online, with users connecting the London rickshaw with familiar experiences from Indian roads.
Along with references to “reverse colonisation,” some users joked about the possibility of bringing Indian-style fare negotiations, the “meter se chalo” phrase and typical auto-rickshaw decorations to British streets.
The reactions underline the contrast surrounding the video. In India, an auto-rickshaw is a routine part of daily transportation, while in London, the same type of vehicle immediately becomes an unusual and attention-grabbing sight.
For Mahindra, the moment also offers an interesting glimpse into how an Indian-made three-wheeler can turn heads far beyond its traditional home market.
CMV360 Says
The sight of a Mahindra rickshaw travelling through London may be unusual, but it reflects the growing global visibility of Indian three-wheelers. Anand Mahindra’s post turned an everyday Indian vehicle into an international talking point, while the reactions showed how strongly auto-rickshaws are connected with Indian road culture. With models such as the Treo and Treo Zor already serving overseas markets, Mahindra’s three-wheelers continue to gain recognition beyond India.
