Govt Approves 4,874 EV Chargers Worth Rs 503 Crore Under PM E-DRIVE Scheme

Key Highlights

  • Govt approves 4,874 EV chargers across India.

  • Total approved investment stands at Rs 503.86 crore.

  • Karnataka gets 1,243 chargers worth Rs 123.26 crore.

  • PM E-DRIVE scheme has a total outlay of Rs 10,900 crore.

  • Oil PSUs to lead EV charging infrastructure deployment.

The central government has approved proposals worth Rs 503.86 crore for setting up 4,874 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across India under the PM E-DRIVE scheme. The announcement was made by H. D. Kumaraswamy during a national conference held in Bengaluru on May 12, 2026.

The initiative is aimed at strengthening the country’s EV charging network and accelerating the adoption of electric mobility across different vehicle segments, including electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, cars, buses, and trucks.

Major Push for EV Charging Infrastructure

The Ministry of Heavy Industries organized the conference to discuss the deployment and expansion of EV charging infrastructure in India. Senior government officials from various states, along with representatives from original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and charge point operators, attended the event.

During the conference, the government highlighted its plans to create a strong and standardized charging ecosystem to support the rapidly growing EV market in the country.

Out of the total approved amount, Karnataka alone has received Rs 123.26 crore for the installation of 1,243 EV charging stations.

States Selected for Charger Deployment

The approved charging infrastructure projects will be implemented across several states, including:

  • Rajasthan

  • Andhra Pradesh

  • Uttar Pradesh

  • Gujarat

  • Kerala

  • Telangana

  • Karnataka

  • Tamil Nadu

The government expects the new charging stations to improve EV accessibility and reduce charging-related concerns among consumers and fleet operators.

Oil PSUs to Play Key Role

Major public sector oil companies will act as implementing agencies for the charging infrastructure projects. These include:

  • Indian Oil Corporation Limited

  • Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited

  • Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited

These companies are expected to use their existing fuel station networks and infrastructure capabilities to support faster deployment of EV charging stations.

PM E-DRIVE Scheme Gets Rs 10,900 Crore Outlay

The charging infrastructure expansion is part of the larger PM E-DRIVE initiative, which has a total financial outlay of Rs 10,900 crore.

Under the scheme:

  • Rs 2,000 crore has been allocated for public EV charging infrastructure.

  • Rs 3,679 crore has been earmarked as demand incentives.

  • The incentives aim to support the adoption of 24.79 lakh electric two-wheelers and 3.16 lakh electric three-wheelers.

  • Rs 4,391 crore has been allocated for deploying 14,028 electric buses nationwide.

The scheme is designed to boost EV adoption while also improving supporting infrastructure across urban and rural areas.

Focus on Modern Vehicle Testing Facilities

Apart from EV infrastructure and incentives, the government has also approved Rs 780 crore for the modernization of vehicle testing agencies operating under the Ministry of Heavy Industries.

The modernization program aims to improve vehicle testing standards, safety checks, and regulatory compliance as the automotive sector shifts towards cleaner and more advanced mobility solutions.

Growing Momentum for Electric Mobility in India

India’s EV sector has been witnessing rapid growth with increasing demand for electric two-wheelers, passenger vehicles, and commercial EVs. However, charging infrastructure remains one of the key requirements for wider adoption.

With the approval of nearly 5,000 new charging stations under the PM E-DRIVE scheme, the government is taking a major step toward building a stronger EV ecosystem and supporting the country’s transition toward cleaner transportation.
