Energy In Motion Partners HPCL to Build EV Truck Charging and Battery Swapping Network Across India

India's electric commercial vehicle ecosystem is set to expand with a new partnership between Energy In Motion Limited (EIM) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL). The two companies have signed an agreement to develop a nationwide network of fast-charging and battery-swapping stations for heavy electric commercial vehicles at selected HPCL fuel outlets.

The collaboration aims to improve charging accessibility for electric trucks and support the country's transition to cleaner freight transportation.

EV Charging and Battery Swapping to Roll Out in Phases

As part of the agreement, Energy In Motion will install and operate fast-charging and battery-swapping infrastructure at selected HPCL retail outlets across India. HPCL has a network of more than 25,000 fuel stations, including locations on major highways and expressways, making them ideal for long-distance freight movement.

The rollout will take place in phases, with the first swap-and-charge hubs planned along three major freight corridors:

• Mumbai–Pune

• Delhi–Jaipur

• Chennai–Bangalore

These corridors are expected to receive the new infrastructure over the next 18 to 24 months, with further expansion planned across the country.

Fast Battery Swapping for Electric Trucks

The new facilities will offer both fast charging and battery swapping services for compatible heavy electric commercial vehicles.

Battery swapping enables drivers to replace a discharged battery with a fully charged one in just seven minutes, significantly reducing vehicle downtime compared to conventional charging. The stations will also be connected to EIM's digital technology platform, allowing users to access:

• Real-time station availability

• Digital payment options

• Remote monitoring of charging and swapping infrastructure

Roles of EIM and HPCL

Under the partnership model:

• Energy In Motion will own, operate and manage the battery inventory along with the charging and battery-swapping equipment.

• HPCL will provide space, power supply, utilities and other common facilities at its retail outlets.

This approach allows both companies to use their existing strengths to accelerate the deployment of EV infrastructure.

EIM Highlights Importance of Reliable Charging Network

Commenting on the partnership, Narendra Murkumbi, Managing Director of Energy In Motion, said reliable charging infrastructure is essential for the success of electric commercial vehicles.

He noted that partnering with HPCL allows EIM to install charging and swapping facilities at locations where truck drivers already stop, benefiting from existing power supply, space, safety systems, staff and driver amenities. According to him, combining EIM's expertise in batteries and fleet operations with HPCL's nationwide fuel station network will help build dependable swap-and-charge hubs on India's busiest freight routes at the speed needed for the country's EV transition.

EIM Expanding India's Electric Heavy Vehicle Ecosystem

Energy In Motion is building an integrated ecosystem for electric heavy commercial vehicles, including megawatt-scale charging and battery-swapping stations across India.

The company launched its first electric heavy commercial vehicle, the Ashwa 55-ton e-tractor, on August 1, 2025.

EIM has already commissioned six heavy-duty battery swap stations in the Delhi-NCR region and the JNPA port area, with a combined daily capacity of 840 battery swaps. The company plans to expand this network to 40 operational heavy commercial vehicle swap-cum-charging stations by the end of March 2027.
