Good news has arrived for sugarcane farmers in Uttar Pradesh. The state government has finalized the date for the upcoming sugarcane crushing season, which will begin on October 1, 2025. This season brings multiple benefits for farmers, including remunerative prices, ethanol-linked payments, and increased procurement for sugar production.

The marketing year for sugar in Uttar Pradesh will officially begin on October 1, 2025. According to senior government officials, sufficient sugar stocks will be maintained to ensure a smooth supply for both domestic consumption and exports. The move is aimed at keeping sugar prices stable in the domestic market while ensuring farmers receive the minimum support price (MSP) for their produce.
The government has promised remunerative prices for sugarcane farmers this season. Officials have stated that around 4.8 billion liters of ethanol are expected to be produced this year, a record figure. The government’s focus on ethanol production is part of its effort to promote ethanol blending with petrol, reduce dependency on oil imports, and create a new revenue stream for farmers.
Farmers will also receive separate payments for ethanol, providing them with an additional income source and improving their overall earnings.
According to the Indian Sugar and Bio-Energy Producers Association, India’s sugar production is estimated to rise to 34.9 million metric tons in 2025–26. Domestic consumption is likely to remain between 28.5 to 29 million metric tons, while Uttar Pradesh will start the new season with an opening stock of 5 million metric tons, slightly lower than last year’s 8 million.
Experts believe this stock level, combined with new production, will be sufficient to meet both domestic demand and export requirements.

India’s sugar exports play an important role in the global market, and the government has a clear strategy in place for this year. Last season, India exported 1 million metric tons of sugar, and with good production expected this year, exports are likely to rise.
Industry experts believe that a clear export policy, stable MSP, and timely government approvals will ensure smooth operations for sugar mills and on-time payments for farmers.
Last year, poor rainfall and reduced sugarcane acreage in several states shortened the crushing season. However, this year is different – sugarcane acreage has increased, and weather conditions have been favorable. As a result, both sugar and ethanol production are expected to be higher, boosting farmers’ profits.
This season’s strategy is not just about higher production but also about strengthening the energy policy of the country. With a focus on ethanol production, sugarcane will play a bigger role in energy security. Farmers will benefit from fair prices, timely payments, and more market opportunities, while the country will benefit from increased ethanol blending and strong sugar exports.

The upcoming sugarcane crushing season is expected to be highly beneficial for farmers in Uttar Pradesh and across India. With record ethanol production, better prices, and a strong export plan, farmers will earn more, and India will strengthen its position in both food security and energy independence.
