During a review meeting held in Chandigarh, the Chief Minister directed that all agricultural tube wells in the state be connected to solar energy in a phased manner. This will help reduce electricity costs and boost profitability in farming.
The PM-KUSUM (Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthan Mahabhiyan) scheme aims to provide irrigation support through solar power, reducing the dependence on diesel and conventional electricity.
Farmers will save on electricity bills
Diesel pump usage will reduce, benefiting the environment
Farming becomes more cost-effective and sustainable
Farmers will receive solar pumps between 3 HP to 10 HP, which normally cost around ₹1.41 lakh. However, under the scheme:
Farmers pay only 25%
30% subsidy is given by the central government
45% subsidy is covered by the state government
The scheme has been running in Haryana since 2018-19. So far, 1.58 lakh solar pumps have already been installed. For FY 2025-26, the target is to install 70,000 more solar pumps with a budget of ₹600 crore.
This is expected to be a big move toward making Haryana self-reliant in solar-powered irrigation.

A proposal has been made to set up a solar plant on 300 acres of land at Ganni Kheda Gram Panchayat, near Raiwali village in Panchkula. This plant will supply solar energy to agricultural tube wells across the district.
HPGCL will identify 5 acres in each district for setting up solar panels for agricultural feeders
Solar structures will double up as community halls (Kalyanam Mandapam) in villages that provide land for solar installations
Solar panels will also be installed on market sheds and warehouses to power farming operations
The Chief Minister has instructed officials to act immediately on complaints of solar pump malfunctions. Special camps will be held in villages with repeated issues, and officials will personally connect with farmers to resolve their problems on the spot.
The application process under PM Kusum Yojana is completely online and transparent. Interested farmers can apply through the official website of the Haryana New and Renewable Energy Department (HAREDA).
They must provide details such as:
Field location
Water availability
Electricity connection status
