Key Highlights:
Farmers get up to 60% subsidy on solar pump setup.
Over 1.7 lakh farmers in Rajasthan have benefited so far.
560 solar plants were installed for the daytime electricity supply.
₹1.05 crore/MW subsidy for grid solar plants under Component-C.
DISCOMs are buying solar power at just ₹3.04 per kWh.
The Central Government is running the PM Kusum Yojana 2025 across India to promote solar energy and help farmers become self-reliant in the energy sector. Under this scheme, farmers can install solar-powered irrigation pumps at a highly subsidized cost, helping them get electricity for irrigation and also contribute to power generation.

Rajasthan is one of the leading states in implementing the PM Kusum Yojana. So far, more than 1.7 lakh farmers in the state have received solar panel-based agricultural pump sets. Existing electric pumps are also being solarized. This has enabled farmers to get daytime electricity, which was a major challenge earlier.
Under Component-A and Component-C, Rajasthan has successfully installed solar energy plants with a total capacity of over 1,000 MW, making it a leader in solar energy production under the scheme.
The PM Kusum Yojana is divided into three main components:
Component A: Installation of grid-connected decentralized solar power plants. So far, 560 plants are being installed to provide power during the day to more than 70,000 farmers.
Component B: Focuses on off-grid solar pumps. Over 1 lakh farmers have already received these pumps.
Component C: Aims at solarizing existing electric pumps connected to agricultural feeders. These pumps are being powered by solar plants set up within 5 km radius of 33/11 kV substations.
Under Component B, the State Horticulture Department is giving farmers a 60% subsidy for installing solar pumps ranging from 3 HP to 7.5 HP. The remaining cost is to be borne by the farmer, and sometimes with help from bank loans.
More than 39,000 solar pump systems have been installed under this component. Due to this, Rajasthan is among the top three states in the country for solar pump installations. The solar plants are mostly set up in rural areas with high demand for agricultural electricity.
For larger solar plants under Component-C, farmers or developers setting up grid-connected solar plants can get a 30% subsidy of the project cost, up to ₹1.05 crore per MW. The Central Government has approved an extra allocation of 6,000 MW capacity in Component-A and 2 lakh solar pumps in Component-C for 2024-25.
The target is to set up 12,000 MW of solar power capacity in Rajasthan through the scheme.
This scheme is not just providing cheap and clean electricity for irrigation, but also turning farmers into energy producers. Solar plants are being installed on unused land near farms, allowing farmers to sell extra electricity back to the grid. This has opened new sources of income for them, promoting rural entrepreneurship.
Power distribution companies (DISCOMs) are also benefiting under the PM Kusum Yojana. They are able to purchase electricity at just ₹3.04 per kWh, which is much lower than exchange prices. This locally generated solar power reduces transmission losses and avoids the need for building expensive power infrastructure.
The scheme has helped generate 1,000 MW of additional power without an extra financial burden on the state government. It is also contributing to lowering carbon emissions by reducing dependency on conventional power sources.

The PM Kusum Yojana 2025 is proving to be a game-changer for the Indian agricultural sector. With up to 60% subsidy on solar pumps and support for large-scale solar installations, farmers are gaining both energy independence and economic empowerment. Rajasthan’s success under the scheme shows the way for other states to follow in creating a sustainable and self-reliant rural economy.
