75% subsidy under SMAM scheme
Women’s groups in Palamu received tractors
Equipment worth ₹5 lakh at just ₹1.29 lakh
Farming costs and efforts reduced
Scheme empowers rural women financially
The government is giving a big boost to women farmers by offering a 75% subsidy on tractors and farm equipment under the Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanization (SMAM) scheme. This initiative is helping rural women modernize farming, reduce costs, and improve productivity.
Two women's livelihood groups in Palamu district, Jharkhand – Laxmi Aajeevika Shakti Mandal (Pipra) and Om Aajeevika Shakti Mandal (Hussainabad) – recently received mini tractors and agricultural equipment under this scheme.
The equipment included a mini tractor, rotavator, plough, and cage wheel. These groups paid just ₹1.29 lakh for equipment worth over ₹5 lakh, saving more than ₹3.70 lakh thanks to the subsidy.
Machine | Actual Price | Price After Subsidy |
₹4,59,000 | ₹91,897 | |
Rotavator, Plough, Cage Wheels | Approx. ₹50,000 | Included |
Total | ₹5,00,000+ | ₹1,29,000 |
This major price reduction is helping women farmers cut costs and increase profits.
Kalawati Devi from Laxmi Mandal said that earlier she farmed with oxen or rented tractors, which was costly and time-consuming. Now, with her own tractor, farming is faster, easier, and more productive.
Shanti Devi from Om Mandal shared that she had to wait nearly six months for the scheme’s benefits but is now happy to own a tractor and equipment. She believes this will significantly improve her crop yield and reduce her farming expenses.
The Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanization (SMAM) is a central government scheme designed to increase the use of modern equipment in farming. It provides 50% to 75% subsidy on tractors, rotavators, ploughs, threshers, and seed-sowing machines. Women farmers, small and marginal farmers, and farmer groups get priority in this scheme.
Farmers can apply through their state agriculture department’s website or visit the nearest agriculture office or district agricultural mechanization officer for assistance. Women farmers in Jharkhand can approach their local agriculture office to benefit from the scheme.
