The government of Bihar has launched a subsidy scheme to promote pea farming, especially beneficial for districts affected by recent floods. Farmers in selected areas can now apply to receive pea seeds at a 50% discount. Peas, a popular crop, mature quickly and improve soil fertility due to the Rhizobium bacteria found in their roots. This scheme not only helps farmers financially but also supports sustainable farming.

Pea farming is advantageous due to its short growth cycle and high market demand. As a legume crop, peas help boost soil fertility, making it a sustainable choice for farmers. The government’s new initiative will help more farmers access quality seeds at half the price.
The scheme is available to farmers in 15 flood-affected districts of Bihar: Khagaria, Begusarai, Madhubani, Samastipur, Supaul, Madhepura, Purnia, Kishanganj, Araria, Katihar, Saran, Siwan, Gopalganj, Bhagalpur, and Saharsa. Eligible farmers can buy pea seeds at a discounted rate of ₹85 per kilogram, which is half of the market price.
Each district has specific cultivation targets. Farmers in Khagaria, Begusarai, Madhubani, Samastipur, Supaul, Madhepura, and Purnia have a target of 1,200 hectares each for pea cultivation. Other districts, including Kishanganj, Araria, Katihar, Saran, Siwan, Gopalganj, Bhagalpur, and Saharsa, have a target of 1,000 hectares each.
