Every year, August 15 holds a special place in the heart of every Indian. It is a day when the tricolour flutters proudly in the sky, symbolising the country’s hard-fought freedom, unity, and progress. Independence Day 2025 will be even more memorable as India celebrates 79 years of independence, marking the completion of 78 glorious years since breaking free from British colonial rule in 1947.
This year, the celebrations are set to be more vibrant with the fourth edition of the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign under the Ministry of Culture. Not only will citizens be encouraged to hoist the national flag at their homes, but they will also have the opportunity to become Har Ghar Tiranga Ambassadors, earning official badges and certificates for their participation.
The campaign is more than just an act of raising a flag, it’s a chance for every Indian to connect deeply with the spirit of patriotism and contribute to a nationwide movement of unity.
The Har Ghar Tiranga initiative was launched in 2022 as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations, which commemorated 75 years of India’s independence.
The core idea is simple yet powerful, encourage every household in India to hoist the national flag during Independence Day. Over the years, this symbolic act has transformed into a nationwide people’s movement, bringing together citizens from all walks of life to celebrate the pride and dignity of the Tiranga.
In its fourth year in 2025, the campaign aims to make the celebrations more interactive by introducing the Ambassador programme, where participants can share selfies with the flag online and get officially recognised.
Before we dive into how to participate, it’s important to understand why the Tiranga holds such deep meaning for Indians.
The Indian National Flag consists of three horizontal stripes:
Saffron (top) – symbolising courage and sacrifice
White (middle) – representing peace and truth, with the navy blue Ashoka Chakra (wheel of law) in the centre
Green (bottom) – denoting faith, fertility, and prosperity
The Ashoka Chakra has 24 spokes, each representing values like justice, perseverance, and moral discipline.
Hoisting the Tiranga is not just a ceremonial act, it’s a reaffirmation of the country’s shared values and unity in diversity.
In 2025, the campaign’s fourth edition will carry forward the enthusiasm of the past three years, but with added opportunities for participation and recognition.
Citizens can now register as Har Ghar Tiranga Volunteers or simply participate as individuals by hoisting the national flag at their home, taking a selfie, and uploading it to the official portal.
The Ministry of Culture has also introduced digital badges and certificates for participants and volunteers, making the event more engaging, especially for younger generations active on social media.
The Volunteer Programme is the backbone of the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign. Volunteers are the ones who spread awareness at the grassroots level, ensuring that every household gets involved.
From August 2, 2025, registered volunteers will receive specific tasks tailored to their local areas, such as:
Educating people about the Tiranga’s history and significance
Assisting households in hoisting the flag correctly according to the Flag Code of India
Helping people capture and upload their selfies with the flag to the official campaign portal
Distributing flags by purchasing them in bulk from post offices
Encouraging civic participation and fostering unity in their neighbourhoods
The Ministry of Culture acknowledges the hard work of volunteers with:
Official Certificates for all volunteers who complete their tasks
Special Recognition at State and National Level for top-performing volunteers with the highest engagement
Digital Badges to be displayed on social media profiles, honouring their contribution
Being part of this programme also means becoming a documented contributor to a historic national movement.
The registration process is simple:
Visit the official Har Ghar Tiranga portal
Fill in the Volunteer Registration Form with personal and contact details
Provide accurate location information to receive local area assignments
Wait for confirmation and task briefs, which will start arriving from August 2
If you prefer to participate without volunteering, you can still become a Har Ghar Tiranga Ambassador by:
Hoisting the national flag at your home or workplace between August 13 and August 15
Taking a selfie with the flag
Uploading it on the Har Ghar Tiranga official website or through partner platforms
Downloading your participation certificate once approved
When hoisting the national flag, it’s important to follow the Flag Code of India, which lays down the rules for usage, display, and respect for the Tiranga. Some key points include:
The flag should always be hoisted in a position of honour
It should never touch the ground or be used as a drapery/clothing
When displayed horizontally, saffron should be at the top
The flag should be made of khadi, cotton, or polyester, as per approved specifications
By following these rules, participants show not just patriotism but also respect for the symbol of the nation.
It’s a chance to connect with India’s history and heritage
You receive official recognition from the Ministry of Culture
It’s a family activity that can inspire children about patriotism
Brings neighbours together
Creates a visually stunning environment with flags everywhere
Strengthens social bonds through shared celebrations
Reinforces unity in diversity
