Farmers growing onions have received good news. The government is offering a 50% subsidy for building warehouses to store onions. This helps farmers keep their produce safe and avoid selling it at low prices due to spoilage concerns.

Under this scheme, farmers can build onion warehouses with a storage capacity of 25 metric tons. The government will cover half the cost of the warehouse, making it more affordable for farmers.
Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan recently shared this information in the Lok Sabha. He said the government is providing this subsidy under the "Integrated Horticulture Development Mission" (MIDH). Previously, the subsidy was based on a unit cost of ₹1.75 lakh. Due to inflation and rising costs, the unit cost has now been revised to ₹10,000 per metric ton.
Farmers can now build low-cost warehouses with a maximum storage capacity of 1,000 metric tons. This change aims to help farmers store more onions and sell them at better prices.
The MIDH scheme covers all perishable horticultural crops, including onions. Other schemes, such as the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana and Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY), aim to reduce post-harvest losses and ensure better prices for farmers.

Up to ₹87,500 can be subsidized to farmers who build a warehouse with a 25-metric-ton capacity. To qualify, farmers must have cultivable land, a water source, and onions to grow.
Farmers can apply for the subsidy at their local e-Mitra or CSC centers. They will need documents like an Aadhaar Card or Janadhar Card and a copy of their Jamabandi. Once the warehouse is built, a committee will verify it. After verification, the subsidy will be transferred directly to the farmer's bank account.

This subsidy scheme aims to help onion farmers store their produce safely, avoid losses, and get better market prices. The government encourages farmers to invest in storage solutions by simplifying applications and increasing support. Farmers should visit their nearest agriculture department or e-Mitra centers for more information.
