Key Highlights:
Volvo Trucks has launched its new advanced Road Train solution in India, featuring the FM 420 model, designed for long-haul, high-efficiency transportation. The Volvo FM 420 is powered by a 13-litre engine that produces 420 horsepower and 2100 Nm of torque. It also comes with advanced features like the I-Shift 12-speed automated manual transmission, which adjusts the gears automatically to balance power and fuel efficiency.
This new Road Train setup offers 50% more volume capacity than the standard 18.75m tractor-trailer combinations. This means it can carry more cargo with just one truck, reducing the need for extra drivers and lowering maintenance costs. While it uses slightly more fuel, the higher load capacity makes it more efficient overall. Two Road Trains can do the job of three regular trucks, reducing traffic and cutting down emissions.
The new Volvo offerings comes with advanced features for a more comfortable and safer driving experience. It has ultra-modern displays, including a 12-inch digital Driver Information Display and a 9-inch touchscreen Secondary Information Display. These displays can show 360-degree camera views and offer real-time driver coaching.
Volvo has also added an electronic stability control system that monitors each wheel on both the truck and trailer, adjusting brake pressure for better stability and safety. For easier manoeuvring in tight spaces, the Road Train is equipped with a self-steering axle on the trailer. This makes it more flexible and easier to handle.
The Volvo FM comes with an 810-litre fuel tank, designed to allow the truck to operate continuously without the need for frequent refueling stops. It also has the highest 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating. The truck features an air-suspended, climate-controlled sleeper cabin with airbag protection, offering both comfort and security for the driver.
Before each trip, the truck's pre-trip diagnostic system checks all essential parameters and alerts drivers to any potential issues through pop-up messages on the display, ensuring everything is in top condition for the journey.
The Road Train concept was officially introduced into regulations in 2020, enabling vehicle combinations to work at higher efficiency and capacity within the logistics industry. This move is part of India's ongoing efforts to modernize its transportation infrastructure and enhance road train efficiency, as stated by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

The Volvo FM 420 can carry more load than regular trucks, which means fewer trucks will be needed. As a result, it will reduce the traffic and possibly cutting down pollution. The truck also has advanced features like a big screen and cameras that help the driver stay safe and drive easily. With its large fuel tank, it doesn't need to stop for fuel as often, saving time and money.
