Key Highlights:
Tata Motors has entered into a strategic agreement with Green Energy Mobility Solutions Pvt. Ltd. (GEMS), the electric mobility arm of Universal Bus Services (UBS), to supply 100 units of its fully electric Magna EV intercity coaches. The MoU was signed during the Passenger Vehicle Expo 2.0 held in Chennai.
The deal marks a significant step toward greener long-distance transport, especially in South India, where UBS operates as a trusted intercity travel service provider.
Focus on Electric Mobility and Sustainability
GEMS was created as part of UBS’s commitment to cleaner transportation options. The company aims to roll out electric buses backed by robust charging infrastructure, targeting long-haul routes. UBS is known for delivering premium bus services and is now taking steps to modernize its fleet with sustainable solutions.
The agreement was formalized in the presence of Dr. T.R.B. Rajaa, Minister for Industries, Government of Tamil Nadu. Also attending were senior state officials and members of the All Omni Bus Owners Association (AOBOA).
Leadership insights:
Minister Dr. T.R.B. Rajaa emphasised Tamil Nadu’s leading role in the automotive and clean mobility space. He said the Tata Motors and UBS partnership is aligned with the state’s larger objective of building an eco-friendly public transport system and cutting vehicle emissions.
Sunil Kumar Ravindran, Managing Partner at UBS and Director at GEMS, said the company is optimistic about the value Magna EV coaches will bring. He highlighted benefits such as enhanced comfort for passengers, reduced operating costs, and zero tailpipe emissions. These align well with UBS’s mission to move toward electric-powered long-distance travel.
Anand S, Vice President and Head of Commercial Passenger Vehicle Business at Tata Motors, called the MoU a significant milestone in India’s intercity EV journey. He shared that the Magna EV was built using real-world insights and rigorous testing. According to him, the vehicle offers strong performance, superior safety, and cost efficiency.
About the Tata Magna EV
The Tata Magna EV is a 44-seater fully electric coach designed specifically for intercity travel. It offers a claimed range of up to 300 km on a single charge. Key features include ergonomic high-comfort seats, Electronic Braking System (EBS), and Electronic Stability Control (ESC), features that help improve both safety and ride comfort over long distances.
Tata Motors Expands EV Footprint in India
Tata Motors continues to be a major player in India’s electric bus space. Apart from the Magna EV, it already has urban transport models like the Starbus EV and Ultra EV in its lineup. Currently, over 3,600 Tata electric buses are running across 11 major Indian cities. Together, they have clocked more than 340 million kilometers and have maintained a high uptime of over 95%. All these EVs are supported by Fleet Edge, Tata’s advanced connected vehicle platform, which allows operators to track, diagnose, and manage fleets in real time.
