Daily passenger demand on major intercity bus routes in South India increases by 30% to 50% during the festive season compared with a regular week, according to an analysis by electric bus operator Fresh Bus. The study, covering travel patterns of more than 6 lakh passengers, found that bookings peak two to three days before major festivals, followed by a strong increase in return journeys after the celebrations.
The findings highlight how festivals such as Dussehra and Diwali influence intercity travel, with passengers travelling to their hometowns, visiting religious destinations and planning short leisure trips during extended holidays.
Andhra Pradesh Routes See Strongest Festive Travel Demand
Routes connecting major cities with Andhra Pradesh experience some of the sharpest increases in passenger demand ahead of Dussehra and Diwali. Working professionals and families travel to their hometowns for the celebrations, while return journeys towards Hyderabad and Bengaluru increase after the festive period.
Fresh Bus identified three of the strongest travel corridors:
Hyderabad-Vijayawada: Records strong demand from passengers travelling home for festivals.
Vijayawada-Visakhapatnam: Sees increased movement linked to family visits and festive travel.
Bengaluru-Tirupati: Benefits from both holiday travel and pilgrimage demand.
The analysis also found changes in demand on leisure routes. Bengaluru-Pondicherry and Chennai-Pondicherry attract more passengers looking for short holidays, while Bengaluru-Chennai typically records a sharper rise in travel around Diwali.
Bus Bookings Peak Two to Three Days Before Festivals
Festive travel demand follows a different pattern from regular weeks, when bookings are generally spread more evenly. During festivals, passenger volumes rise sharply two to three days before the occasion, followed by a strong return flow once celebrations end.
Evening departures are among the first services to sell out, as many passengers prefer to finish their workday before beginning their journey. The data also indicates that travellers are booking tickets earlier, particularly on routes where seats become limited close to the festival.
These trends show that bus operators need to plan services according to specific routes, departure times and passenger travel patterns to manage the seasonal rush effectively.
Fresh Bus Increases Festive Bus Fleet to Over 100
Commenting on the findings, Sudhakar Chirra, Founder and CEO of Fresh Bus, said festive travel in India has traditionally been closely connected with visiting family and returning home. However, these journeys are becoming more concentrated and better planned.
He also highlighted the growing contribution of leisure travel and “faithcation” trips, which combine travel with religious visits. According to Chirra, understanding where, when and why passengers travel is increasingly important for operators seeking to provide reliable services during peak periods.
To meet the higher demand, Fresh Bus has increased its festive bus inventory from around 30 buses last season to more than 100 this year. The additional capacity will support more departures on the busiest corridors during the festive period.

Fresh Bus's analysis shows that festive travel is becoming increasingly time-sensitive and route-specific across South India. With daily passenger demand rising 30% to 50% on key corridors, advance bookings and additional bus services are becoming important for managing seasonal demand. Strong travel flows towards Andhra Pradesh, growing pilgrimage and leisure trips, and the early sell-out of evening departures underline the need for better planning. Fresh Bus has expanded its fleet to address this demand and support more reliable intercity travel during festivals.
