Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel, H.D. Kumaraswamy, led a meeting about introducing electric buses under the PM E-Drive scheme. Around 10,900 electric buses will be given to big cities in four states, as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's plan for clean urban transport, as shared by the Press Information Bureau.
The discussion covered the rollout in Telangana, Karnataka, Delhi, and Gujarat, showing progress in the government's goal for eco-friendly city travel. After the talks, the Ministry of Heavy Industries shared the number of electric buses each city will get: Bengaluru will receive about 4,500, Hyderabad 2,000, Delhi 2,800, Ahmedabad 1,000, and Surat 600.
The PM E-Drive scheme plans to deploy 14,028 electric buses with a total budget of ₹10,900 crore between April 2024 and March 2026. It is one of the biggest national programmes in the world to switch public transport to electric on such a large scale.
Kumaraswamy said, “Under the guidance of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji, India is moving ahead strongly in promoting clean urban transport. Cities like Bengaluru and Delhi are now using electric buses to make public transport cleaner, smarter, and better.”
The Union Minister highlighted how important this initiative is, saying, "We are doing more than just providing electric buses, we are creating the future of India's transport with new ideas and care for the environment. Working closely with states like Telangana, Karnataka, Delhi, and Gujarat, we are committed to fulfilling the PM E-Drive promise."
