Key Highlights:
NITI Aayog has collaborated with IIM Bangalore, Smart Freight Centre India, CALSTART/Drive to Zero, and WRI India to create the NITI GearShift Challenge hackathon as part of the e-FAST India program.
This hackathon intends to address the country's economic and environmental difficulties so that zero-emission trucks (ZETs) can be used on Indian roadways.
Students, scholars, researchers, and transportation service practitioners are invited to participate in the NITI GearShift Challenge, which aims to develop novel business models by addressing the operational, technological, and financial challenges to the widespread usage of electric trucks in the country.
Financial institutions, industry forums, and e-FAST India knowledge partners have all enrolled in the programme.
Need for Electrification
India's freight sector is crucial for its economy, serving over 1.4 billion people. However, road freight contributes to 40% of road transport-related CO2 emissions and 55% of the country's diesel consumption. Shifting to electric trucks can help reduce carbon emissions, improve air quality, and enhance energy security.
Hackathon Details
Round 1: Teams will submit business models tackling barriers such as financial, operational, or technical issues. The deadline for submitting a presentation is July 20, 2024. The top 10 teams will advance to the next round.
Round 2: Shortlisted teams will present detailed business models with a clear execution plan from July 25 to August 15, 2024. A panel of industry leaders and sustainability experts will judge the proposals.
