Key Highlights:
Jupiter Electric Mobility (JEM), a part of Jupiter Wagons Limited, recently acquired Log9’s Railway and Electric Truck Battery divisions. The deal includes Log9’s manufacturing facility in Devanahalli, Bangalore, and the transfer of engineering and production teams to JEM.
Strengthening In-House Battery Production
One of the most notable advantages of this acquisition is the ability for JEM to produce batteries in-house for its electric light commercial vehicles (e-LCVs). This development is crucial as it allows JEM to have greater control over the battery supply chain, ensuring a more reliable and cost-effective production process for its electric vehicles.
As the demand for electric trucks and commercial vehicles grows in India, this strategic move will allow JEM to stay competitive by streamlining its production and reducing dependence on external suppliers.
JEM’s electric truck segment will particularly benefit from this integration. With Log9’s battery technology now under JEM’s control, the company can innovate and enhance its products more efficiently. Backward integration allows for greater control over the quality of components, resulting in improved product performance.
Additionally, having a reliable battery supply chain will help JEM meet the growing demand for electric commercial vehicles, offering a more sustainable and cost-effective option for businesses.
Expansion of Railway Product Portfolio
This acquisition supports electric trucks and boosts Jupiter Wagons' offerings in railway products. Recently, JEM and Log9 secured a battery order for the Vande Bharat trains in collaboration with Siemens, marking a significant achievement in the railway sector.
Boosting Production Capacity
Adding Log9’s Bangalore manufacturing facility increases JEM’s production capacity, particularly benefiting its electric truck lineup. This facility will help JEM streamline operations through backward integration, combining manufacturing and technology development under one roof.
Leadership Insights
Vivek Lohia, Managing Director of Jupiter Wagons Limited, highlighted that the acquisition aligns with JWL’s goal of expanding its role in sustainable transportation solutions, particularly in the electric mobility and railway sectors.
