JCB GT is the world’s fastest backhoe loader at 72.58 mph.
Record set on November 20, 2014, at Bathurst, Australia.
Driven by Matt Lucas during Bathurst 1000 event.
Powered by a V8 Chevrolet engine with lightweight design upgrades.
Unofficial top speed reached 90 mph during testing.
JCB has once again proven its engineering excellence with a machine that goes far beyond construction work. The JCB GT backhoe loader is not just a heavy-duty machine, it is a record-breaking speed marvel that can compete with sports cars. With an official top speed of 72.58 mph (116.82 km/h), it holds the title of the world’s fastest backhoe loader, certified by Guinness World Records.
The historic achievement took place on November 20, 2014, during the famous Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 in Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia.
JCB demo driver Matt Lucas, also known as “The Dig”, pushed the powerful machine to its limits and achieved the record speed. This remarkable feat officially earned the JCB GT its place in global history.
Unlike traditional backhoe loaders, the JCB GT was never meant for digging or lifting. It was specially created as a high-speed stunt machine to entertain crowds at motorsport events and showcase JCB’s engineering capabilities.
The project originally began in 1988, when Anthony Bamford decided to develop a unique high-performance machine. The responsibility was given to experienced demo driver Malcolm Grindey, who played a key role in designing and developing the dragster-style backhoe.
While the official record stands at 72.58 mph, the JCB GT has gone even faster. During testing at Maastricht Airport, Malcolm Grindey managed to push the machine to an unofficial speed of 90 mph (145 km/h), a figure that highlights its extreme performance potential.
The JCB GT is based on the popular JCB 3CX Sitemaster, but it has been heavily modified to achieve high speeds. Every component is designed with performance and weight reduction in mind:
Lightweight Steel Chassis: Built for strength while reducing overall weight
Aluminum Components: Loader and excavator arms replaced with lightweight aluminum
Fiberglass Body: Outer shell designed for speed and weight efficiency
Powerful Engine: Equipped with a V8 Chevrolet engine delivering massive power
Fastrac Axle: Uses the rear axle from the JCB Fastrac, enabling high-speed stability and wheelie capability
These upgrades transform a standard construction machine into a high-performance speed vehicle.
The JCB GT is not only about speed, it has become a global icon. The machine gained widespread media attention, appearing on prime-time shows like News at Ten, and was featured in major newspapers worldwide. It even entered pop culture, becoming part of comedy routines by Frank Carson.
Even today, the JCB GT continues to amaze audiences across the world with its thrilling demonstrations. It stands as proof that JCB is more than just a construction equipment manufacturer, it is a brand that pushes the limits of innovation.
