Expanding LNG, CNG, and electric truck offerings for sustainable transport.
Eicher Trucks & Buses is redefining the future of commercial vehicles in India with its powertrain innovations, customer-focused approach, and commitment to efficiency and sustainability. At the recent launch of the Eicher Pro Plus series, Sachin Agrawal, EVP – Product Development, shared how Eicher is blending electronics with engineering to create smarter, more reliable, and future-ready trucks.
Agrawal highlighted that Eicher’s focus areas include fuel efficiency, durability, sustainability, regulatory readiness, alternative fuels, and digital security – all while keeping customer needs at the center of innovation.
“When electronics meet engineering with purpose, the outcomes redefine efficiency,” said Agrawal.
Eicher has introduced a dynamic HVAC system that is directly integrated with the engine management system. This approach ensures the air-conditioning system consumes less fuel while maintaining comfort.
Air-conditioning, now mandatory in trucks, typically raises fuel consumption by 4–5%. Eicher’s solution allows the system to respond dynamically, ensuring optimal mileage and cabin comfort – staying true to its title of Mileage ka Badshah.
To further improve HVAC performance, Eicher switched from traditional reciprocating compressors to scroll compressors (SCROM), making it the only OEM in India using this tech for light-duty trucks. Scroll compressors are quieter, more fuel-efficient, and create less friction.
Eicher also uses variable displacement compressors, which adjust output based on cooling demand, reducing energy wastage and fuel use.
Eicher has invested heavily in long-life components. For example, its condenser fans are tested for 3,000+ hours, three times the industry standard. The sealed clutch system and additional evaporator filters keep the HVAC system effective even in harsh operating conditions.
Agrawal stressed that uptime is crucial for customers, and this focus on durability helps reduce downtime and maintenance costs.
Eicher is already working on Euro 7/BS VII engines well ahead of the 2029 timeline, in collaboration with Volvo Group’s European center.
“We were ready with BS VI in 2014, well before it was mandated. The same mindset applies to BSVII,” Agrawal said.
The company is also advocating for real-world fuel efficiency tests (VECTO) instead of lab-only cycles, making regulations more practical and relevant.
With modern trucks using six to seven ECUs, cybersecurity is critical. Eicher is preparing for AIS 189 and 190 standards to ensure software security and prevent system-wide risks.
Eicher has also introduced Firmware Over-The-Air (FOTA) updates, a feature rarely seen in commercial vehicles, allowing quick updates without downtime.
Agrawal confirmed that diesel remains dominant, but CNG now makes up 13–15% of sales in light- and medium-duty trucks, depending on city regulations.
Eicher is also experimenting with LNG trucks for long-haul applications, with the Eicher Pro 6055 LNG tractor showing promising results.
Electric trucks are also being deployed for city logistics and parcel delivery, where payloads are lower and clean transport is encouraged. Hybrid solutions like mild hybrids and diesel-electric assist systems are in development.
Eicher’s joint venture with Volvo Group has resulted in a state-of-the-art powertrain plant, producing more than 50,000 engines annually for both Indian and global markets.
The company builds 2L to 8L diesel and CNG engines that power every Eicher vehicle, ensuring deep integration, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
“Our biggest trucks carry India’s most powerful engine, built entirely in-house,” Agrawal said proudly.
Agrawal summed up Eicher’s approach with a strong message: “The future is uncertain. But when you design products with efficiency, safety, and real-world customer value in mind, you’re always prepared.”
With its clear focus on efficiency, sustainability, durability, and customer value, Eicher continues to set benchmarks and lead innovation in India’s commercial vehicle industry.
