The partnership combines Amazon’s extensive logistics network and long-term freight demand with Tata Motors vehicle engineering, manufacturing and service capabilities. The companies aim to make electric freight transportation more practical and demonstrate how zero-exhaust-emission trucks can operate at scale.

The planned addition of 3,000 electric trucks will also contribute to the expansion of India's electric commercial vehicle fleet. The initiative is expected to help address key challenges associated with electric truck adoption, including charging infrastructure, servicing and operational support.

Tata Electric Truck Deployment to Begin in Delhi

The initial rollout will start in Delhi during the 2026 festive season. Amazon plans to deploy light- and medium-duty electric trucks from Tata Motors across its middle-mile transportation network.

Middle-mile transportation involves moving shipments between warehouses, fulfilment centres, sorting facilities and other logistics locations before they reach customers. Electrifying these operations will help Amazon expand its electric vehicle programme beyond last-mile delivery.

The deployment will support freight movement within cities during the festive period, when shipment volumes increase across e-commerce and retail supply chains.

The first batch of electric trucks was flagged off by Shri H. D. Kumaraswamy, Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel, Government of India. The event was attended by Abhinav Singh, Vice President, Operations, Amazon, APAC, Middle East, Africa and Turkey; Kishore Lanka, Director, Operations, Amazon India; Sushant Naik, Global Head - Government & Corporate Affairs and Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, Tata Motors; and Rajesh Kaul, Vice President and Business Head - Trucks, Tata Motors, along with other dignitaries.

2,800-km Delhi-Bengaluru-Chennai Freight Corridor Planned for Electrification

After the initial city-level deployment, Amazon and Tata Motors plan to expand electric truck operations to major national highways. One of the key objectives is to electrify the 2,800-km Delhi-Bengaluru-Chennai corridor along NH48.

The corridor spans seven states and connects six of India’s largest e-commerce regions. Its electrification is intended to support long-distance freight movement using electric trucks and demonstrate their suitability for large-scale logistics operations.

Dedicated charging infrastructure will play an important role in this expansion. Amazon is working with Yahhvi, a charging infrastructure provider, to support the rollout. Yahhvi has already developed 10 charging yards across India for Amazon’s transportation network.

Reliable charging facilities will be important for keeping electric trucks operational, supporting longer routes and reducing disruptions during freight movement.

Tata Ultra E.7 Electric Truck Features and Technology

The initial deployment includes the Tata Ultra E.7, an electric truck designed for commercial freight transportation. The vehicle combines an integrated electric axle with charging, braking and safety technologies intended to support everyday logistics operations.

Key features of the Tata Ultra E.7 include:

  • Integrated e-axle: An electric drivetrain designed for commercial truck applications.

  • CCS2 fast charging: Supports fast-charging capability through the CCS2 charging standard.

  • Regenerative braking: Helps recover energy during braking.

  • Crash-tested cabin: Features a new-generation cabin designed with crash safety in mind.

  • High-voltage safety systems: Provides safety measures for the truck’s high-voltage electric components.

The truck is designed to offer lower operating costs, higher uptime and a lower-emission alternative for freight transportation. Tata Motors believes that greater localisation and a competitive total cost of ownership can make electric trucks a practical option for fleet operators across different commercial vehicle segments.

As part of the collaboration, the companies will also focus on charging infrastructure, vehicle servicing and operational support to help integrate electric trucks into large-scale logistics operations.

Delhi EV Policy 2026 Supports Electric Truck Adoption

The planned rollout also aligns with Delhi’s 2026 Electric Vehicle Policy, which offers a significant incentive for early adopters of medium-duty electric trucks.

Under the policy provision outlined in the announcement, the first 1,000 privately owned medium-duty electric trucks registered during the three months after the policy launches will be allowed to enter Delhi at any time of day for 10 years. These vehicles will be exempt from the city’s usual restricted-entry hours, commonly known as “No Entry” hours.

The provision is intended to encourage electric truck adoption and support freight movement in the capital.

The Amazon-Tata Motors collaboration also complements India’s broader efforts to promote cleaner transportation and commercial fleet electrification through initiatives such as the PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE), the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for automobiles and auto components, the PLI scheme for Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) battery storage, and PARIVARTAN.

Government Welcomes the Electric Freight Initiative

Shri H. D. Kumaraswamy, Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel, said the collaboration reflects growing demand for electric mobility in India. He highlighted how nationwide logistics requirements can be supported by electric trucks manufactured in the country.

He added that government programmes such as PM E-DRIVE, PLI Auto and PLI ACC would continue to support the transition to electric mobility. He also expressed the expectation that more initiatives of this kind would help advance green logistics.

Dr. Pankaj Kumar Singh, Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Transport and IT, Government of Delhi, said Delhi has been working to expand zero-emission mass mobility and strengthen charging infrastructure across the capital.

He described the decarbonisation of logistics as an important next step in reducing transport-related emissions and improving air quality. He also highlighted the collaboration as an example of how government policies and industry participation can support sustainable urban logistics and improve the quality of life for Delhi residents.

Amazon Expands Its Electric Vehicle Network in India

For Amazon, the deployment is part of its broader commitment to electrify transportation and achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.

The company has already deployed more than 15,000 electric vehicles across over 500 cities in India. It is also working to make electric vehicle adoption easier for its carrier partners and drivers by supporting charging infrastructure and other solutions.

The company’s efforts extend to commercial trucking, which presents different operational challenges from last-mile delivery. Long-distance freight requires dependable charging facilities, route planning and vehicles that can meet business requirements while maintaining operational efficiency.

Amazon is also a co-founder of The Climate Pledge, which supports efforts to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.

As part of its wider commercial fleet electrification efforts, Amazon has supported Laneshift, a programme developed with C40 Cities. The programme piloted electric trucks on the Bengaluru-Chennai corridor and contributed to India’s first evidence-based roadmap for zero-exhaust-emission trucks.

More recently, The Climate Pledge launched SUPEREV, a unified digital platform designed to simplify commercial electric vehicle adoption by bringing together access to charging infrastructure, vehicles, financing and renewable energy.

These initiatives complement Amazon’s partnership with Tata Motors by addressing several requirements for wider electric truck adoption.

Tata Motors Sees Electric Trucking Moving Beyond Pilot Projects

Rajesh Kaul, Vice President and Business Head - Trucks at Tata Motors, said electric trucking in India is moving beyond the pilot stage towards wider adoption.

He highlighted deep localisation and the potential for an attractive total cost of ownership as important factors that can make zero-emission trucks a practical business proposition for fleet operators.

According to him, the collaboration with Amazon goes beyond supplying vehicles. It also involves charging infrastructure, servicing and operational support to help electric trucks work effectively in large logistics networks.

The company expects the initiative to demonstrate how electric commercial vehicles can be integrated into large-scale freight operations and contribute to the wider adoption of cleaner transportation solutions in India.
