Delhi Takes Big Leap Toward Green Transport: DTC to Set Up 9 New EV Charging Hubs for Buses and Heavy Vehicles

Key Highlights

  • DTC to install EV charging stations at nine depots across Delhi.

  • ₹31 crore project to support electric buses and heavy vehicles.

  • Each depot will have 1600 KVA substations and 240 kW fast chargers.

  • Tenders issued; construction to start after the bidding process.

  • Initiative supports Delhi’s EV Policy 2.0 and zero-emission transport goal.

The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) is gearing up to strengthen Delhi’s electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem by developing a robust charging infrastructure for heavy commercial vehicles (HCVs). This move aligns with the Delhi government’s vision to fully electrify public transport within the next 18 months, creating a cleaner, more efficient, and sustainable mobility network for the capital.

Nine DTC Depots to Get High-Capacity Charging Stations

According to transport department officials, DTC will set up EV charging facilities at nine key depots across the city. These include:

  • Rohini Sector 37

  • Keshopur

  • Nangloi

  • Kalkaji

  • Sukhdev Vihar

  • Nand Nagri

  • Ghazipur

  • Hasanpur

The total project investment is estimated at ₹31 crore. Each depot will be equipped with 1600 KVA compact substations and 240 kW fast chargers, capable of powering hundreds of electric buses and heavy commercial vehicles daily.

Tenders Issued for Construction Work

Officials confirmed that tenders have been floated to invite government-approved contractors for both civil and electrical work related to the charging infrastructure. Once the bidding process is completed, construction is expected to begin soon, marking a major milestone in Delhi’s EV infrastructure development.

A Step Towards Zero-Emission Public Transport

This initiative plays a crucial role in Delhi’s EV Policy 2.0, which focuses on promoting sustainable mobility and reducing carbon emissions from the transport sector. The new high-capacity charging depots will not only cater to DTC’s electric bus fleet but will also support freight and heavy vehicle operations, creating a scalable and dependable EV ecosystem.

By integrating fast-charging facilities across multiple locations, DTC aims to ensure that electric buses and heavy vehicles can operate seamlessly throughout the city, contributing significantly to cleaner air and reduced noise pollution.

Paving the Way for a Greener Delhi

Delhi’s transport transformation is well underway, and the expansion of DTC’s charging network highlights the city’s commitment to green mobility. Once completed, these charging depots will serve as vital energy hubs, supporting the state’s goal of achieving a fully electric, zero-emission public transport system.

Through this project, Delhi continues to position itself as a national leader in sustainable urban transport, setting an example for other cities to follow in India’s journey toward an electric future.
