Applied Intuition, a Silicon Valley-based vehicle software supplier, and Isuzu Motors, a Japanese commercial vehicle manufacturer, have collaborated to develop self-driving trucking solutions.
The goal is to improve business logistics and alleviate concerns about crucial driver shortages.
Background on Driver Overwork
In Japan, truck driver overwork has become a significant public health issue. Nearly 84% of drivers face health problems due to overwork, and studies reveal that truck drivers account for 34.3% of overwork-related deaths.
To tackle this, the Japanese government revised its Labor Standards Law, limiting annual work hours to 3,300 hours, including breaks.
However, this has raised concerns about driver shortages, with the industry expecting a 36% decline in drivers by 2030. This problem, known as "The 2024 Problem," could disrupt supply chains and challenge Japan's reputation for reliable service.
Statements from Leaders
Qasar Younis, co-founder and CEO of Applied Intuition, stated, "We're advancing commercial trucking autonomy with Isuzu, enabling our OEM customers to deploy next-generation technology in their vehicles."
Shinsuke Minami, president and COO of Isuzu Motors Ltd., added, "This partnership will greatly advance autonomous driving technology development and provide a strong foundation for Isuzu's autonomous trucking business."
By deploying advanced autonomous driving technology in Japan, the cooperation hopes to increase logistical solutions and alleviate driver shortages. In April 2024, Isuzu Motors Ltd. unveiled its mid-term management plan, "ISUZU Transformation - Growth to 2030 (IX)," with the goal of establishing autonomous driving solutions as a new business pillar.
Applied Intuition's technology is designed and developed with its customers' needs in mind, allowing automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to build safe and intelligent autonomous systems while also providing the solutions required for accelerated autonomy development, validation, and deployment.
