In recent years electric three wheelers in India have become more popular among Indian customers. The electric rickshaw market is also expanding each month with sales reaching tens of thousands each month.

This article will shed light on the reason why the electric three wheeler industry is growing at this rate. This article will discuss the advantages of electric three-wheelers in detail along with the best electric three wheelers to buy in India.

Electric Three-Wheelers Introduction and Types

India has seen a surge in both supply and demand of electric three wheelers in the past few years. This is because electric vehicles hold many advantages over fossil fuel-based three wheelers. Additionally, the electric three wheeler benefits such as affordable prices and low maintenance costs have contributed significantly to increase their growth.

Electric three wheelers have mainly two types: electric passengers carrying three wheelers (E-rickshaws) and electric cargo carrying three wheelers. The advantages of electric three-wheelers including both these categories are discussed below.

Advantages of Electric Passenger and Cargo Three-Wheelers

There are many advantages of electric passenger and cargo three wheelers in India. The complete list of advantages of electric three wheelers is discussed below.

Affordable Prices

One of the biggest advantages of electric three-wheelers is their affordability. A combination of lower manufacturing costs and the help of governmental subsidies has made buying an electric rickshaw or cargo three wheeler much cheaper for Indian customers.

The main components of an electric three wheeler are a battery, motor, steering, body and tyres. The cost of manufacturing reduces significantly because of fewer components. Thus customers can buy them at affordable prices.

Government subsidies are another factor contributing to budget-friendly prices of electric three wheelers. Government schemes such as FAME - I & II helped greatly to make electric 3-wheeler prices more affordable for Indian citizens.

Easier Home Charging - Cheaper than Fuel

Electric commercial vehicles can be easily charged at homes. Charging an electric three-wheeler at home only requires a standard charger. Overnight charging is the most efficient way to charge these vehicles.

Charging is cheaper than fuel costs. An e-rickshaw can be charged in 5-8 hours depending on its make and model. An e-rickshaw will use around 1.5-2 units of electricity to fully charge its battery which translates to 15 to 20 rupees in New Delhi. On average, electric rickshaws can run a 50-150 km distance on a single charge.

This means that an electric rickshaw owner can generate more profits by spending less money on fuel.

Low Maintenance Costs and Easy to Care

Electric rickshaws and cargo trucks have fewer moving parts such as an engine that requires regular maintenance thus their maintenance costs are lower.

To begin with, electric three wheelers are powered by electric batteries, not Internal Combustion Engines (ICE). ICEs require regular fuel oil changes, tune-ups and other repairs for a three wheeler to run, but that is not the case for three wheelers powered by electric batteries.

Thus the owners of electric rickshaws have to spend less money on maintenance which means more savings for them.

Easy to Use and Less Noisy

Another one of the advantages of electric three-wheelers is their easy driveability. Three wheelers powered by electric batteries are equipped with automatic transmission which means they are relatively easier to use than diesel-powered vehicles.

Electric commercial vehicles also make less noise. Less noise becomes convenient for drivers which leads to improved work productivity.

Environmental Benefits of Electric Three-Wheelers

Traditionally, three-wheelers either use diesel or petrol as a fuel. The problem with both fuel types is that large amounts of carbon emissions are emitted into the surrounding environment. Carbon emissions are harmful to the environment and cause air pollution.

One solution to this problem is CNG three-wheelers. CNG-powered three-wheelers emit around 95% less carbon emissions than fossil fuels such as diesel and petrol. CNG three wheelers still produce some amount of emissions which is why they are not a complete solution.

The best solution is electric three-wheelers. Electric three wheelers, including passenger and cargo vehicles, are powered by electric batteries. Electric batteries do not produce any harmful emissions thus they are environmentally friendly. No air pollution is caused because of them.
