The Central Government has launched a significant initiative to support farmers and increase income for rural women. This move is expected to strengthen rural livelihoods and provide new employment opportunities.

At Krishi Bhawan, New Delhi, two important Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed. Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, and Union Minister of State Chandrashekhar Pemmasani were present. The agreements aim to ensure quality agricultural inputs for farmers and expand banking services in rural areas.
The first MoU, signed between the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and the Department of Posts, focuses on safe and reliable transportation of agricultural input samples such as seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides. Samples will now be sent to laboratories in tamper-proof packaging with barcodes and QR codes, enabling complete digital tracking.
Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan highlighted that poor-quality seeds and fertilizers harm farmers’ crops and income. The new system will provide timely lab reports and strict action against counterfeit input sellers. Through India Post’s extensive logistics network, samples from manufacturers, dealers, and markets will reach laboratories safely, ensuring farmers receive high-quality inputs.
The second agreement, between the Ministry of Rural Development, the Department of Posts, and DAY-NRLM (Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihoods Mission), focuses on expanding banking and financial services in rural areas. Rural women, particularly those part of self-help groups, will benefit from this initiative.
Under this program, the BC Sakhi model will leverage India Post’s network to bring banking services to every village. BC Sakhis will receive training, tablets, POS machines, and certifications to offer services like Post Office savings schemes, Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, and cash transfers. It is expected that this initiative could boost their monthly income by ₹15,000 to ₹30,000.
Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia emphasized the role of India Post Payments Bank in delivering financial services effectively to rural areas. This will enhance access to banking and strengthen women’s economic participation.
Both ministers described the initiatives as a “Whole of Government” approach. By ensuring quality agricultural inputs and providing new income opportunities for women, the programs support roughly 70% of India’s population. These measures strengthen the rural economy, give new momentum to the Lakhpati Didi Scheme, and align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a self-reliant, developed, and poverty-free India.

The government’s dual approach ensures that farmers are protected from counterfeit and substandard inputs while rural women gain employment and financial independence. The BC Sakhi model and enhanced agricultural sample tracking together promise stronger rural livelihoods, higher incomes, and a more resilient rural economy.
