Garlic Farming: Add This Fertilizer to Boost Garlic Bulb Size and Yield

Key Highlights

  • Use potassium fertilizers for bigger, stronger garlic bulbs.
  • Apply potash at sowing and 50-70 days after planting.
  • Spray MKP and boron for better tuber growth.
  • Ensure weed-free fields before fertilization for maximum results.
  • Boost yield and profits with timely nutrient application.

Garlic, loved worldwide for its pungent flavor and medicinal properties, is a highly profitable crop for farmers. However, to achieve bumper production and grow large, strong garlic bulbs, proper fertilization is key. Experts recommend using potassium-based fertilizers at specific stages of garlic cultivation to enhance bulb size and improve yield. Here’s a step-by-step guide for farmers.

Why is Potassium Important for Garlic Crops?

Potassium plays a vital role in garlic farming. It promotes root development, increases tuber size, and boosts the plant's disease resistance. A potassium deficiency can lead to smaller bulbs and reduced yields, directly impacting profits.

When and How to Use Potassium in Garlic Farming

  1. At Sowing Stage:

    • Apply potassium as a basal dose during sowing to provide essential nutrients for early plant growth.
    • This helps the garlic plants establish quickly and prepare for robust tuber development.
  2. At 50-70 Days After Planting:

    • This period is crucial as tubers begin to form. Apply potassium-rich fertilizers like NPK or potash to support bulb growth.
    • Dissolve 1 kg of NPK (with 50% potassium content) in water and spray it over one acre of garlic crop.

Spray Fertilizers for Maximum Effect

Spraying water-soluble fertilizers directly on crops ensures quick nutrient absorption.

  • Between 50-75 Days:

    • Use 0.52.34 Mono Potassium Phosphate (MKP) at 3 grams per liter of water, along with 1 gram of boron (20%) per liter. Spray this mixture on the crop.
    • This helps strengthen tubers and improves overall plant health.
  • During Full Plant Growth:

    • To further increase bulb size, mix 0.0.50 potassium sulfate fertilizer (5 grams per liter) and micronutrients (1 gram per liter).
    • For better results, add 500 grams of boron (20%) per acre.

Additional Tips for Healthy Garlic Plants

  • Use Calcium Nitrate: This improves the weight and size of the garlic bulbs.
  • Ferrous Sulfate for Weak Plants: If plants have weak stems or roots, apply 10 kg of ferrous sulfate per acre. Combine 19% ferrous and 10% sulfur for maximum effectiveness.
  • Weed Control: Before applying fertilizers, ensure the field is weed-free to prevent competition for nutrients.

Key Benefits of Proper Fertilization

By following these fertilization practices, farmers can achieve:

  • Bigger, stronger, and heavier garlic bulbs.
  • Higher yields per acre.
  • Improved disease resistance in crops.
  • Greater profits from market demand for premium-quality garlic.

Focus on timely potassium application and crop care for cost-effective, high-yield garlic farming. With the right methods, farmers can transform their garlic harvest into a bumper crop.
