Early sowing window: Oct 10–30
Yield potential: 30–35 quintals/hectare
Low erucic acid varieties are safe for health
Double Zero varieties boost poultry feed income
Pusa Vijay yields up to 36 quintals
As the autumn cool sets in, mustard sowing season has started, giving farmers a golden opportunity to boost oilseed production. Mustard is not only an important source of edible oil but also provides valuable oil cake for livestock feed and has export potential. According to the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), early sowing now can yield up to 30–35 quintals per hectare with proper seed selection, timing, and farming technology.

Farmers are advised to sow mustard between 10th and 30th October. Early sowing strengthens plants, reduces disease risks, and ensures better market prices due to early ripening. Delayed sowing can lower yields and increase vulnerability to diseases.
IARI has developed low erucic acid mustard varieties containing less than 2% erucic acid, making them safe for heart health. Key varieties include:
Pusa Karishma – High-yielding, safe oil.
Pusa Mustard 21, 22, 24, 29 – Tall plants, good yield, late maturing.
Pusa Mustard 30 – Coarse grains, yield 30–35 quintals/hectare.
Pusa Mustard 32 – Ready in 140–145 days, yield 32–35 quintals.
Double Zero Mustard – Safe oil and cake, beneficial for poultry feed.

Farmers aiming for both oil and cake production can choose Double Zero Mustard varieties, which have <2% erucic acid and <30 ppm glucosinolates, making the cake safe for poultry.
Pusa Double Zero 31 – Matures in 140–145 days, yields 28–32 quintals.
New Pusa Double Zero (2025) – Matures in 140 days, yields 32–34 quintals.
These varieties open new market opportunities in poultry farming and increase farmer income.
If irrigation or budget is limited, IARI’s common varieties are still a good option:
Pusa Bold – Bold grains, reliable yield.
Pusa Jai Kisan, Pusa Jagannath – Suitable for different agro-climatic zones.
Pusa Vijay – Ready in 145 days, yield 32–36 quintals/hectare.
Always use certified seeds.
Purchase seeds from government agriculture centers or trusted sources.
Treat seeds before sowing to protect them from diseases.
Farmers should select improved varieties based on their climate, soil type, and geographical conditions. Contact the nearest agriculture department for guidance. Ensure deep plowing, proper drainage, and balanced fertilizer use before sowing. Seek technical advice from IARI and Krishi Vigyan Kendras regularly.
Key Takeaway: Early sowing between 10th and 30th October with improved mustard varieties can help farmers achieve high yields up to 35 quintals per hectare, better market prices, and additional income through oil and oil cake production.

Mustard sowing has begun, and IARI recommends farmers take advantage of the early sowing period between October 10 and 30 for maximum benefit. With improved varieties like Pusa Karishma, Pusa Vijay, and Double Zero types, farmers can achieve higher yields of up to 35 quintals per hectare while also producing safe oil and valuable cake for poultry. Early sowing ensures stronger plants, disease resistance, and better market prices.
