Many tractor drivers do not have a license, thinking it is not required for an agricultural vehicle. However, the Supreme Court has clarified that a driving license is mandatory to drive a tractor.
According to the law, agricultural tractors fall under the 'Light Motor Vehicle' (LMV) category.
This means a person with an LMV license can legally drive a tractor.
If someone drives a tractor without an LMV license, legal action and fines may be imposed on them.
A Light Motor Vehicle (LMV) license is required for vehicles up to 7,500 kg, including tractors.
However, driving a tractor in the fields without a license is generally not a strict offense.
But if the tractor is taken onto the road, a valid LMV license is mandatory under traffic rules.
Driving on the road without a license is a violation of the Motor Vehicle Act and can lead to fines or legal consequences.
The Supreme Court has ruled that any illegal modification of a tractor, such as altering its original structure, can result in heavy fines.
A penalty of up to Rs 1 lakh can be imposed for illegal modifications.
Tractor owners must also ensure valid insurance coverage to claim compensation in case of an accident.
Using a tractor for commercial passenger transport is illegal, with fines of Rs 2,200 per passenger.
An LMV license is valid for driving a tractor for farming purposes.
However, if a trolley is attached and the total weight exceeds 7,500 kg, an LMV license is not sufficient.
In this case, an HMV (Heavy Motor Vehicle) license is required.
The law strictly states that tractors should be used only for agriculture. Carrying commercial goods or passengers is illegal.

A driving license is required to drive a tractor, especially on public roads. An LMV license is sufficient for agricultural tractors, but an HMV license is necessary if a trolley is attached and exceeds the weight limit. Modifying a tractor illegally or using it for commercial transport can result in heavy fines. Farmers and tractor owners should follow these rules to avoid legal issues.
