CSIR develops a 26 HP electric tractor with 64% cost savings.
Works 4–5 hours per charge; battery lasts up to 10,000 cycles.
Production cost ₹8.5 lakh; farmers to get it for ₹4–₹4.5 lakh after subsidy.
Suitable for ploughing, rotavating, and transporting goods.
Environment-friendly and ideal for small and medium farmers.
There’s great news for Indian farmers as the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has developed a new electric tractor that is not only eco-friendly but also reduces farming expenses by up to 64%. This innovation is expected to reach farms across India soon, including in Chhattisgarh, bringing a new direction to traditional farming.
According to Dr. Pradeep Rajan, Chief Scientist at CSIR, this new electric tractor can operate continuously for 4 to 5 hours after a full charge, which takes only 4 hours. It is designed to be user-friendly and can be easily operated by both men and women. Unlike diesel tractors, this e-tractor offers a fatigue-free driving experience, making it convenient for long working hours in the fields.
Dr. Rajan explained that a diesel tractor typically consumes about 1.5 litres of diesel per hour, whereas the electric tractor uses only 18–20 units of electricity for five hours of operation. This difference results in a direct saving of around 64% on operational costs, which will greatly benefit farmers, especially those with small and medium-sized farms.
The CSIR e-tractor has a power output of 26 HP, making it suitable for both small and large-scale farming. For comparison, two oxen together produce only about 1 HP. This tractor can easily handle all major farming implements such as ploughs, rotavators, and cultivators, ensuring smooth and efficient farming operations.
Its battery comes with a 5-year guarantee and can be charged and discharged up to 10,000 times. Apart from fieldwork, it can also be used for transportation, capable of carrying loads for up to 6 hours continuously, opening additional income opportunities for farmers.
Avinash Kumar Yadav, Principal Scientist at CSIR, shared that the planning for the e-tractor began in 2020, and the model was ready by December 2023 after three years of development. The production cost of the tractor is ₹8.5 lakh, but the government has already initiated the subsidy process. Once approved, farmers will be able to purchase this tractor for just ₹4 to ₹4.5 lakh, making it highly affordable.
Experts believe that this electric tractor can bring major changes to Indian agriculture. It will reduce farming costs, cut down pollution, and make agriculture more sustainable. The technology can benefit not only large-scale farmers but also those with 2–3 acres of land. Farmers can also offer tractor services to others after completing their own work, increasing their overall income potential.
The e-tractor plays a key role in reducing carbon emissions and diesel dependence, promoting green farming practices. It supports cost-efficient and environmentally responsible agriculture, helping small and medium farmers save more money while working more efficiently.
The new CSIR electric tractor stands out as a sustainable, affordable, and efficient solution for India’s farming community. It promises to modernize agricultural practices, enhance productivity, and improve farmers’ incomes. With widespread adoption, it could transform rural India’s economy and help move the country toward a more sustainable and self-reliant agricultural future.
