The Government of Madhya Pradesh continues to strengthen women’s welfare through its flagship scheme, the Mukhya Mantri Ladli Behna Yojana. First announced on January 28, 2023, this initiative aims to improve women’s health, nutrition, and financial independence, especially for married women from economically weaker sections of society.
Over the past three years, the scheme has become one of the most important women-centric welfare programs in the state, regularly delivering monthly assistance to millions of women.

The Ladli Behna Yojana is a monthly cash assistance program. It provides direct financial support to eligible women, empowering them to meet personal and household needs with dignity. Funds are transferred through Aadhaar-linked DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer) to beneficiaries’ bank accounts, ensuring transparency and prompt delivery.
The scheme focuses on three major goals:
1. Improve Women’s Health & Nutrition
Regular financial support helps beneficiaries afford nutritious food, medicines, and better healthcare.
2. Promote Financial Security
By giving cash directly to women, the scheme helps reduce financial dependence on household members.
3. Strengthen Decision-Making Role
Financial autonomy empowers women to participate more actively in family decisions and household planning.
Each eligible woman receives ₹1,500 per month, an increase from the earlier ₹1,000/₹1,250 amount.
This enhanced amount was approved by the Madhya Pradesh government in late 2025 to boost support to families.
On 16 January 2026, the government released the 32nd monthly installment of ₹1,500 each to over 1.25 crore women.
The state transferred ₹1,836 crore directly into beneficiaries’ bank accounts at a program presided over by Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav in Makhan Nagar (Narmadapuram).
Along with this, around 29 lakh women received additional benefits toward LPG cylinder refilling support (~₹90 crore).
To qualify, applicants must meet all these conditions:
Resident of Madhya Pradesh
Married women, including:
• Widows
• Divorced or abandoned women
Age between 23 and below 60 years (age is calculated as of 1 January of the application year)
Family’s combined annual income does not exceed ₹2,50,000
No family member should be a government employee, income taxpayer, or pensioner under central/state government service
Women above 60 years of age receive other old-age pensions and are thus excluded from this scheme.

This is a major change from earlier years when the scheme was still expanding.

With ₹1,500 per month, women can contribute meaningfully to household needs from food to education and healthcare.
Regular cash support improves maternal and child nutrition, enhancing overall family well-being.
Women spending within local markets or investing in small enterprises stimulates rural and urban economies.
Financial participation increases women’s voice in family decisions, leading to more balanced household planning.
Beneficiary Count Falling: Official data shows the number of beneficiaries has declined by over 5.7 lakh in recent years due to eligibility expiry (age limit) and no new enrolment.
No New Entrants: Government statements confirm there’s no plan to resume fresh registrations yet.
Budget Strain: With increased payouts, the scheme now represents a large portion of the state’s welfare expenditure.

The Mukhya Mantri Ladli Behna Yojana remains one of Madhya Pradesh’s most impactful welfare programmes, strengthening women’s financial security and dignity. With increased monthly support to ₹1,500, transparent DBT payments, and widespread reach across the state, the scheme continues to benefit millions of women.
However, recent policy shifts like suspension of fresh registrations and declining beneficiary numbers signal a need for future review to ensure continued inclusion and impact.
