Yamaha Prospr Gets New Herbicide Attachment to Improve Autonomous Weed Control in Orchards and Vineyards

Key Highlights

  • Yamaha launched a new herbicide attachment for the Prospr platform.

  • Developed and manufactured by Croplands Equipment.

  • Automates spraying, nozzle control, and spray rate adjustments.

  • Prospr offers up to 40 hours of runtime and 70% lower fuel use.

  • It could help address labour shortages in Indian orchards and vineyards.

Yamaha Agriculture has introduced a new herbicide attachment for its Prospr autonomous vehicle platform, expanding the machine’s capabilities for orchard and vineyard operations. The attachment has been developed and manufactured by Croplands Equipment and is designed to integrate directly with the Prospr system.

The launch strengthens Prospr’s role as a modular and AI-powered autonomous vehicle platform that can support multiple tools for different farming tasks. With the addition of herbicide spraying, growers can now use the platform for more efficient weed management, a critical activity that directly impacts crop quality and overall yield.

Designed to Address Labour and Timing Challenges

Weed control remains one of the biggest challenges for speciality crop growers. Labour shortages and delays in field operations often make it difficult to manage weeds at the right time. Uncontrolled weed growth can reduce crop productivity and affect fruit quality.

The new herbicide attachment aims to solve these challenges by automating the spraying process and helping growers carry out weed control more efficiently and consistently.

Advanced Automation for Precision Spraying

The herbicide attachment automates several key spraying functions, reducing manual intervention during operations. These features include:

  • Automatic nozzle activation

  • Tank agitation management

  • Liquid level sensing

  • Spray rate adjustment based on vehicle speed

The system also features mechanical breakaway boom arms that absorb impacts during operation. This helps protect crops, vines, and equipment when working in narrow orchard and vineyard rows.

Growers can choose between direct tank mixing and inline dosing systems, allowing better control over herbicide concentration based on field requirements.

Centralised Monitoring Through Yamaha’s Management System

All attachment configurations are fully connected to the Yamaha Agriculture management interface, including the Multi-Vehicle Remote (MVR) system.

This technology allows one or two operators to monitor and manage multiple autonomous vehicles from a single location. As a result, farms can improve operational efficiency while reducing labour requirements for routine spraying activities.

Prospr Platform Offers Long Runtime and Lower Fuel Consumption

The Prospr platform is already being used in orchards and vineyards across the United States, Australia, and New Zealand.

The autonomous vehicle is powered by a hybrid diesel-electric drive system that delivers up to 40 hours of runtime. According to Yamaha Agriculture, the platform can reduce fuel consumption by up to 70% compared to conventional alternatives.

Additional features include:

  • Over-the-air software updates

  • Remote diagnostics

  • Precision spraying through electrically driven Quantum fans

  • Fast row-to-row turning capability

  • Purpose-built chassis and tyre setup designed to reduce soil compaction

The platform is suitable for both small, complex orchard blocks and large-scale commercial farming operations, eliminating the need for separate systems across different farm sizes.

Can Prospr Be a Future Solution for Indian Farmers?

India's orchard and vineyard sectors, especially grape, pomegranate, and mango cultivation, continue to rely heavily on manual weed control practices. Seasonal labour shortages in key agricultural states such as Maharashtra and Karnataka often create difficulties in completing weed management activities on time.

A platform like Prospr could help improve efficiency and reduce dependence on manual labour. However, several challenges may affect large-scale adoption in India. Most orchards are small and fragmented, regulations for autonomous farm vehicles are still evolving, and rural internet connectivity remains inconsistent in many areas.

Industry experts believe that pilot projects in organised wine-growing regions such as Nashik and Baramati could provide a practical starting point for evaluating the technology under Indian farming conditions.

CMV360 Says

The new herbicide attachment significantly expands the capabilities of Yamaha Agriculture’s Prospr autonomous platform by bringing automated weed control to orchards and vineyards. With advanced spraying automation, remote fleet management, long operating hours, and improved fuel efficiency, the system offers a modern solution for speciality crop growers. While adoption in India may take time due to farm size and infrastructure challenges, targeted pilot projects could demonstrate their potential to transform orchard and vineyard management in the coming years.
