Toyota Develops New Fuel Cell System for Cars and CVs

Key Highlights:

  • Toyota developed its third-generation fuel cell system for cars and commercial vehicles.
  • The system offers better fuel efficiency, longer range, and high durability for heavy-duty vehicles.
  • It features a compact design, which makes it versatile for various applications.
  • The system will be available in markets like Japan, Europe, North America, and China after 2026.
  • Third-generation fuel cell system is more durable, fuel-efficient, and cost-effective than the previous version.

Toyota Motor Corporation has developed its third-generation fuel cell (FC) system. This marks a significant step in the company’s pursuit of a hydrogen society. This new fuel cell system is designed for a range of applications, from commercial vehicles to passenger cars, as well as stationary generators, rail systems, and ships.

Third-generation Fuel Cell Systemfor Commercial Vehicles

For heavy-duty commercial vehicles, the new fuel cell system offers the durability of diesel engines and deliver high power. This makes it suitable for demanding tasks in industries like transportation and logistics.

Toyota's all-new third-generation fuel cell (FC) system is designed to meet the unique demands of the commercial sector. It offers the same durability as traditional diesel engines. This making it suitable for heavy-duty applications. Along with improved fuel efficiency, this system also boasts a significant reduction in costs compared to the previous version.

One of the standout features of the 3rd Gen FC system is its compact design. This makes it easier to integrate into various commercial vehicles, offering flexibility for manufacturers in designing their vehicles.

Third-generation Fuel Cell System for Passenger Vehicles

The third-generation fuel cell system provides better fuel efficiency, which gives a longer cruising range for passenger vehicles. This improvement aims to offer drivers more peace of mind by extending the driving distance on a single charge.

Main Features of the 3rd Gen fuel cell System:

Better Durability: It lasts up to 2 times longer than the previous version, with a design that is as durable as diesel engines and doesn’t need regular maintenance.

Improved Fuel Efficiency: It’s 1.2 times more fuel-efficient than the old version, giving you 20% more cruising range.

Lower Costs: Because of its new improvements in how the cells are designed and made, the overall cost is much lower.

Expanding to New Markets

Toyota plans to introduce this system in key markets, including Japan, Europe, North America, and China, starting after 2026. This move highlights Toyota's commitment to hydrogen-powered technology on a global scale.

Unveiling at the H2 & FC EXPO in Tokyo

The 3rd Gen FC System will be showcased for the first time on February 19 at the H2 & FC EXPO (International Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Expo) in Tokyo, Japan. This will be an important moment for Toyota as it reveals the future of hydrogen technology.

Toyota's Vision

Toyota sees hydrogen as a critical component in achieving carbon neutrality. The company is collaborating with partners across various industries to innovate in hydrogen creation, transportation, storage, and usage. The continuous evolution of fuel cell technology is essential for the growth of a hydrogen society, and the 3rd Gen FC System represents a major milestone in this ongoing effort.
