Key Highlights:
Tata Motors has filed a patent for an autonomous self-driving concept vehicle designed to transport both goods and passengers. The autonomous self-driving concept vehicle is named the Tata YU. This vehicle was developed in just six months at Strate School of Design, Bangalore. Designers Ansuman Mallik and Atmaj Verma created it under the guidance of experts from Tata Motors and the design school, including Ajay Jain (Tata Motors), Edmund Spitz (Head of Transportation Design, Strate School), and Thomas Dal (Dean, Strate School).
The Tata YU is a concept of a compact vehicle with dimensions of 3,700 mm in length, 1,500 mm in width, and 1,800 mm in height. It features hub-mounted electric motors, but details about its battery capacity and range have not yet been revealed. The Tata YU prototype has two main sections: a central area for storing e-commerce parcels and a rear section for transporting passengers.
The Tata YU vehicle is designed to support the e-commerce sector by carrying product boxes of different sizes. It can pick up boxes directly from warehouses and has an automatic sorting system that allocates deliveries based on priority.
Tata YU can also work like ride-hailing apps such as Uber. The rear section of the Tata YU can accommodate up to two passengers. Passengers enter their destination in an app, and if a vehicle is going that way, they can hop on. Payments can be made through the app, making the ride easy and smooth. The vehicle can carry up to two passengers at a time.
Tata YU features specially equipped auto systems called "bridges," enabling direct package deposits and reducing wait times for customers. The system is also linked to gig workers through an app, allowing them to pick up parcels from designated stops and complete the final delivery. Gig workers earn a commission for each delivery they complete through the Tata YU system, making it a flexible earning opportunity. Currently, Tata YU remains a concept, but it highlights Tata Motors' vision for innovation in mobility. A production timeline is expected around 2030 or later before the vehicle becomes commercially available.

CMV360 Says
Tata YU is a good idea that combines self-driving taxis and delivery services in one vehicle. It uses smart technology to make travel and deliveries easier. Gig workers can also earn money by delivering packages. Right now, it’s just a concept, but if it becomes real, it could change the way we move and send things in the future.
