Schaeffler is ready to serve various segments in both ICE and EV categories, including two-, three-, and four-wheelers.
Schaeffler Strengthens Presence in Two- and Three-Wheeler Segments

Key Highlights:

  • Schaeffler expands in two- and three-wheelers using ICE and Vitesco’s EV tech.
  • Developing wet clutches for 400cc+ motorcycles as demand rises.
  • Vitesco merger boosts Schaeffler’s EV expertise with key components.
  • India’s two-wheeler sales grew in 2024, with EVs crossing 2 million units.
  • Showcased e-bike drives, low-voltage scooters, and a hybrid scooter at EICMA.

Schaeffler India is boosting its role in the two- and three-wheeler markets. It is using its experience in internal combustion engine (ICE) parts and its new electric powertrain solutions from the Vitesco Technologies acquisition. The company believes there are many opportunities as the Indian market moves towards two wheelers and electric vehicles.

Leadership Insight's:

Harsha Kadam, Managing Director and CEO of Schaeffler India, explained, “We already have a strong presence in the ICE two-wheeler segment with our bearings and one-way clutches. Now, we’re developing wet clutches for motorcycles with engines of 400cc and above as the market shifts.”

Schaeffler had been considering entering the electric two-wheeler market, and the Vitesco merger has given it a strong advantage. “Vitesco already has expertise in electric two-wheeler technology, especially in sensors and electronics for both ICE and EVs. This strengthens our position,” said Harsha Kadam.

The acquisition also gave Schaeffler access to key components like ECUs, knock sensors, and integrated powertrain solutions. “Earlier, we didn’t make ECUs. Now, with Vitesco’s technology, we have access to their designs, including motor controllers, gearboxes, and power electronics—all in a complete package,” he added.

Expanding Across ICE and EV Segments

Schaeffler is ready to serve various segments in both ICE and EV categories, including two-, three-, and four-wheelers. “We have been gaining business in the passenger car EV market, and now the two-wheeler segment is also ready. We can now offer solutions across all categories,” said Harsha Kadam.

As India’s two-wheeler market moves towards premium models and electric vehicles, Schaeffler aims to play a key role in the future of mobility, supported by local production, innovation, and its expanded product range.

Sales Trends in the Indian Auto Market

According to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, in 2024, India recorded sales of 19.54 million two-wheelers, 728,670 three-wheelers, and 4.27 million passenger vehicles. Among two-wheelers, models above 125cc grew faster than entry-level ones. In the passenger vehicle segment, utility vehicle sales grew by 17% year-on-year, while small car sales dropped significantly. Electric vehicle sales also saw strong growth, increasing by 27% to cross 2 million units for the year.

Schaeffler’s Showcase at EICMA 2024

At EICMA 2024, the German automotive and mobility giant showcased its latest range of two-wheeler products. The exhibit featured chainless drives for e-bikes, low-voltage electric scooters, and side-by-side vehicles. It also included components for fuel-efficient motorcycles, along with advanced bearing and sealing solutions. Additionally, the company unveiled a hybrid scooter concept developed in collaboration with scooter maker Kymco.

CMV360 Says

Schaeffler's focus on electric and high-capacity motorcycles seems like a smart move. With India shifting towards electric vehicles and bigger bikes, they are in the right place. Their combination of experience in traditional engines and new electric technology puts them in a strong position.
