Rivian is expanding the sales of its electric delivery vans to fleets of all sizes across the United States. This move comes over a year after ending its exclusive partnership with shareholder Amazon.
Known for its popular R1S SUVs and R1T pickup trucks, Rivian has seen growing demand for its commercial vans beyond Amazon. The company has been testing these vans with large fleets and preparing to offer them to a broader market. The success of van sales, along with the upcoming launch of its more affordable R2 SUVs in 2026, is seen as important for Rivian’s future, especially as overall EV demand has slowed due to high borrowing costs.
Rivian had a pilot phase with large U.S. fleets to test its vans, which helped shape its fleet management process for the wider market. “These pilots have paved the way to enable Rivian to open sales further,” the company said in a statement.
The announcement follows Rivian overcoming a component shortage that previously slowed production of its vans, SUVs, and pickups trucks. Last month, the company exceeded analysts’ expectations for fourth-quarter deliveries. Rivian has also been cutting costs through supplier contract renegotiations and improvements in manufacturing processes to turn a profit.
Exclusive Deal with Amazon
In late 2023, Rivian ended its exclusive deal with Amazon but reaffirmed its commitment to deliver 100,000 vans by 2030, with 20,000 already in Amazon’s fleet. Following the end of the exclusive deal, AT&T became the first company to purchase Rivian vans in a pilot program, although the company did not disclose the number of vans purchased or the financial details.
